I climb up the wooden planks nailed into the tree ignoring the rain. Once I made it to the top I sit down on the v shaped tree branches. This is my favorite hiding spot, when I want to get away from everyone. The tree is high enough that you can kind of see the top skyscrapers of Burgens. But not today. A giant storm is brewing in the distance . Part of it is already on top of us. Why am I in a tree in the middle of a storm? Good question. July and Martin are suppose to be coming back soon. Up here I can make sure they are coming. The rain starts to fall down harder. It's so hard I can't see my hand in front of me. My grey T-shirt and jeans are clinging to me, soaked. My blonde hair hangs loosely in its French braid.
"Pastel-" Lane calls from down below. But his voice gets drowned out by the rain.
"What?" I yell back.
Then a streak of lighting zips down a couple of trees away from me.
"Oh crap." I quickly start climbing down the steps, but they are slippery and I can't see anything. Thunder shakes the ground making me lose my grip for a split second but I grab the tree again. I finally make it to the ground but my feet sink down in the mud.
"Well isn't this wonderful." I mumble to myself.
I rip my feet out and walk through the rain to our house. It's a good thing we got plastic tarp wrapped around the roof.
My hands are bleeding from the wood but I don't notice it. I open the door and see Lane sitting on the bed with his head in his hands.
"Lane?" I whisper running to his side. I expect him to look at me with sad eyes telling me something happen to July and Martin, but he had the exact opposite emotion on his face. He was smiling.
"I know what The Impossible is for me."
I stare at him in shock. Then I feel a huge grin form on my face. "Oh my god! Lane that's amazing!" I grab his arms and start to jump up and down.
"What is it?" I ask.
"I can... I can fly." He says looking at me in the eyes.
"You can fly." repeat.
"Yes."
All the worry and anger and confusion and loneliness that had been building up in for for the pass years disappears.
"Show me!" I say grabbing his hands and pulling him outside.
The rain has stopped but there is still storm clouds around.
"Okay. Here we go." Lane says. He closes his eyes in concentration. His fist closes by his side and then something magical happens.
He floats off the ground.
"Oh my god." I whisper in my hand.
This is what the Sanders want. The Impossible. The power to fly.
Fear creeps back into me.
If Lane now, actually has The Impossible... then he is even in more danger.
Before I can ask him how he figured out he could fly something in the distance cracks.
The noise gets closet am closer.
"Umm Lane?..." I whisper to him, and see the had frozen.
Just then July and Martin come shooting through the woods.
Relief floods me.
But before I can shout out there name July says, "The Sanders are chasing after us."
