In His Eyes

Prologue

Korean dramas usually has a story line wherein they show the difference between two social classes. In the eyes of society, there are only two types of people: the rich and the poor. People in between the lines are usually not relevant to the story. It always circles around how powerful and influential the elite are and how hopeless and helpless the commoners are. And usually, the protagonist is the poor character who then falls inlove with a rich person. The conflict then will revolve on how they will fight for their love. And this is the part where an antagonist appears. The rich guy is forced in an arranged marriage with another rich girl. In all stories, this rich girl turns out to be the bad character that every viewer will hate.

In my opinion, that's not always the case. How television portrays this character is beyond exaggerated. The way they deliver this type of role makes the people misunderstand the character. Through the years, the mainstream misconception of this role went on. And eventually, this was already accepted and not even once that it was corrected.

I can only say one thing about this type of plot: it's the story of my life.

Long before when grandfather was still young, he had a business venture with one of the biggest construction companies of South-East Asia. This project had to be in one of the mountainous areas of South Korea. The project was about developing this province to become one of the fastest and most advanced cities in the continent. However, this was not able to push through.

Rebellion and protests grew as the government approved this project. The locals fought for their rights. The land was very sentimental to them for they inherited it from their ancestors.

One day, grandpa had to site-visit the place. To avoid a fuss, he and his team needed to disguise theirselves as locals. The site-visit went very well, infact it was went very smooth. Little did they know that a local had noticed their faces and followed them. When the team finished their business, the man jumped out of nowhere and attacked the team. It was very unpredictable. The site-visit became a blood bath. When the man locked his aim at grandfather, the more that he became ferocious. Just before he can stab my grandfather, a woman came up and stopped the man.

My grandfather was very grateful to this woman. To this event, grandpa decided to decline the project. He went to that province by and by just to thank her. You know, the story could have been about them. They could have married and lived the word forever since grandfather came to love her eventually. But they never happened for the woman fell inlove with another man instead. One time, grandfather was not able to visit her for a long time and when he did, he regretted that he ever came back to look for her. He witnessed a daily life of a simple couple, happy enough for my grandfather to leave and forget about her.

Years passed by and my grandfather finally settled with a woman. He tried to love her dearly but nothing can compare to how he loved his woman in the past. Before grandfather died, he told mom what was his last wish that he wants us to do- to find the woman and let me marry her grandson.

Arranged marriage never bothered me. In the society that I grew up, it was always about the money. My mother was once married to a business tycoon. My father is very power-hungry. He never had enough with the fortune he had. He always wanted more. The time came when mom's company's stock went down, he immediately left us for a richer woman. Good thing, he wasn't able to get all our money away. Mom learned from her story. She raised me up on her own and with grandfather beside her, they groomed me to who I am now. "The person who falls inlove first is always the loser." Mom taught me how everything in this world is nothing but pure competition.

Me and mom went the mountain where grandfather experienced his first torment. We finally got to meet the Byun family, I finally got to meet Baekhyun.
