The door hinges squeak with protest against the hesitant push of 16 year old Lana Elric. She glances down to where the door knob and screws lay at her bare feet, then up and down the hall to ensure that the coast was clear. It was the 10 year anniversary of her fathers disappearance, which meant that her mother would be gone for the majority of the day, and that her Uncle Alphonse would be visiting Central. She was always left home alone on this day, but as tradition stands she was given only one single rule. That rule was the very thing she was breaking right now; entering her father's study. With uncertainty she enters the small, comfortable room and flicks on the light. The room was just as her father had left it, ignoring the layers of dust that had gathered on any and every surface in the room. Her blue eyes scan the room, a somber look to them as she felt a mix of feelings welling up inside her.
The room had 4 bookshelves, each one stacked to the max with books of all kinds of knowledge on alchemy and the reactions that could be created. Straight ahead was her father's desk, which sat abandoned, as if it too was still waiting for the return of Edward Elric. The chair still remained pushed out, papers and open books laying in a disorganized mess on the table. Next to the desk a hook on the wall held up a simple red jacket, time and adventures having tooking some tole on the old material, the only decoration being a single symbol on the back.
With a shaky breath Lana slaps herself on her cheeks simultaneously with both hands as she thinks to herself sternly. 'Pull yourself together Lana! You're not here to admire the room's layout! You're here to do what everyone else is too scared to do, and that's to find some answers!' With this newfound determination in mind, Lana gets to work.
After pulling back her troublesome blonde hair into a thick braid, Lana begins reading over the several papers which lay strewn across the desks' surface. Unfortunately, nothing of any interest comes up. After examining the papers that, to her great disapointment only reveal information on the Automail business, she moves to the books. However like the papers, the books only reveal the different types of metals that are used in the Automail, as well as different ways to build the limbs, depending on who was buying and what there needs were.
"Was all this just a waste of time?!" Lana shouts in furious anger as she throws the stack of papers towards the wall with a fiery temper her mother always teased her over, and how that was one thing she could blame her father for giving her. She watches with frustration as the papers slowly float to the ground, all but one, which falls to the ground much quicker than the rest. Frowning in confusion, Lana kneels down and picks up the envelope, flipping it over to inspect the front. It was adressed to a house, but had no name and the return adresss wasn't listed. Flipping it to the back, Lana opens the letter quickly after checking the halls once more. Inside was a single piece of paper with a stream of numbers that were all jumbled together throughout the entire page, no spaces or anything, just numbers.
"What the heck is this...?" Lana questions aloud as she tries to figure out ways of deciphering it, figuring it must be some type of code, but alas it was to no avail. She screams in frustration and swings her clenched fist to the side, coming into contact with her fathers old desk. "Dammit!" She curses as closes her eyes tight, feeling tears threatening to fall. 'This is so stupid! I finally find a lead but it only leads to a dead end!'
Agrivated and upset, Lana gives the desk another hard hit. The gentle sound of metal falling is faintly heard, causing Lana to freeze in her movements. She slowly lifts her head and turns to the desk, seeing a chain hanging from the desk. Without hesitation, Lana throws herself under the desk and looks up to the bottom of it, and what she sees causes her to loose her breath, for underneath that desk was a state certified alchemist watch, having been held up by a lot of tape, obviously not meant to be discovered by anyone who didn't already know it was there.
