Chloe was sat on the couch of her living room, eyeing the door nervously as the TV played in the background.
It had felt like an eternity since their last case together, when in actual fact it had only been a week ago.Lucifer hadn't showed up to work for a while, and Chloe had just assumed that he was taking time to grieve. She didn't want to bother him when he was at his most vulnerable.
She let herself get lost in thought again as she reminisced over their good memories together. Everything had seemed to have changed ever since the mysterious death of their friend, and Chloe missed the way things used to be.
But her deep thoughts were soon interrupted by a light knock at the door, and Chloe suddenly snapped out of her day dream. She made her across the room, so eager to see her partner that she felt slightly dizzy from standing up so fast.
As she reached for the handle, she took in a deep breath.
Just like Chloe had been before, Lucifer was stood outside her apartment lost in thought, and he was slightly startled when she finally opened the door.
They caught each other's gaze for a few seconds, both realising just how much they had missed one another, even if it had only been a week. The eerie silence of the room was an indication to them both that they should probably stop staring at one another and say something.
Lucifer was first to speak.
"Hello, Detective", he said with a genuine smile on his face.
His eyes were dark from an obvious lack of sleep, yet bright at the same time.
Chloe saw them glisten in the pale light of the early morning, and found herself almost getting lost in them again, but caught herself in the act before she responded to him."Hi Lucifer" she said, a smile spreading across her face now too.
Chloe couldn't bring herself to say much else. She was honestly just so glad to finally be in his company.
She gestured for him to come inside, and they walked over to the couch in silence. As they both sat down beside one another, making sure they were a safe enough distance apart for it to not be too awkward or intimate, Chloe started off the conversation.
"You know, I don't want to get all weird or whatever, but I've really missed you lately". She nodded as she spoke, making sure her words seemed as genuine and honest as she'd intended.
"But it's only been a week, detective. Have you really grown that attached to me?" he teased.
"Only kidding. I've missed you too."
He smiled cheekily at her."Not to get all weird or whatever" Lucifer added, repeating her own words jokingly.
Chloe giggled as she playfully hit his shoulder, and she lingered there for a while.
As if there was some sort of magnetic energy between them, they both moved a few inches closer to one another, still giggling slightly.Their laughter slowly died down as Chloe tilted her head up slightly to look at Lucifer. Her eyes traced over the dark circles under his eyes.
"How have you been doing?" Chloe asked cautiously.
"Oh, me detective? I'm fine!". He let his hands fall to his lap, trying to act casual.
Chloe tilted her head to the side, furrowing her brows. He was clearly lying, but she didn't want to force the truth out of him.
Lucifer looked into her eyes, knowing that she saw right through him. She always did.
He hesitated as he began to speak again, this time telling her the truth.
"I'm not..." he began. "I don't feel like myself. I- I miss her."
Tears began to form in his eyes as he forced a soft smile. He didn't want to worry Chloe, but he couldn't help the sudden wave of emotion that washed over him.
Chloe immediately noticed, and out of instinct she lifted her hand to rest on his arm. She softly squeezed it, causing him to look directly at her face. Butterflies formed in her stomach as their eyes locked.
"Hey" she whispered. "It's okay Lucifer. That's okay."
He stayed silent, hanging on her every word.
"I miss her too, but I'm here for you, okay? Always."
Lucifer smiled at her, a small tear now rolling down his cheek.
Chloe reached her hand up from his arm to his face, letting his head rest in her palm. She wiped the single tear away with her thumb, stroking his now damp skin, and it suddenly reminded her of the last kiss they shared. It was moments before they both found out about Charlotte's death. Lucifer had finally opened up to her and tried to explain that, although he couldn't prove it to her, he really was the devil.
'No your not, not to me' she had said.
The memory played in her mind as she stared into his deep brown eyes, holding his face in the same way she had done that evening.
The pair leaned in closer to one another, vulnerability in both their eyes. Although they had shared intimate moments before, none of them had ever felt as special as this one.
Now only inches away, the two were just about to close the distance between them, until Lucifer's gaze averted upwards, towards the stairs leading to Chloe's room.
"What's wrong?" she asked him disappointedly. She had gone too far, she knew it.
"I'm sorry Chloe, it's just... do you hear that?"
She sat puzzled, wondering what on earth Lucifer was talking about. Perhaps this was his way of distracting her from the situation that was about to take place.
But then she heard it too, the buzzing of her alarm clock coming from the upstairs bedroom."I'm so sorry Lucifer, it's my alarm." said Chloe apologetically. "It can't be 6am already."
"It appears we've been together longer than we thought, Detective" he said through a forced smile. "You should know by now that any attempted moments between us will always end in some form of interruption" he joked, trying to make light of the situation.
She laughed along, still disappointed that, not only was their kiss interrupted, but she also had to leave for work soon.
"I better get ready then, wouldn't want to be late for work. You're welcome to stay here after I'm gone if you'd like, you know, make yourself at home" she gestured to the shelf of alcohol, jokingly.
"As much as you know I love a good drink, Detective, what makes you think I'm not coming with you?"
Chloe's eyes widened. She had not expected his mood to change so quickly, although that was a cliche 'Lucifer' move; avoiding your feelings.
"Really? You're ready to start working again? I mean- I'd love that of course, but are you sure?"
"Yes. I have a feeling it'll be good for me."
he replied, standing up from the couch.
Chloe did the same, straightening out her shirt nervously as she rose to her feet."Okay." she said softly.
Before she turned to walk up the stairs and get ready for work, she decided to place a small, swift kiss on Lucifer's cheek, resting a hand on his shoulder as she balanced on her tip-toes.
Although their previous moment had been ruined, she still felt as if she should give him a sign that her feelings towards him still remained.
It wasn't long before the two were side by side in Lucifer's convertible, the wind in their hair as they drove past the coast on the way to the precinct.
It was moments like this where Lucifer found it easiest to forget all his problems. Being with his Detective, driving through LA as they exchanged small, meaningful glances and soft smiles.
