I woke up with a smile, knowing that tomorrow was my 11th birthday and I was really excited as I would probably get my first Hogwarts letter. I stretched myself while getting up from bed and tidied a bit of my messy caramel-colored hair as I walked down to the kitchen and was preparing a bowl of cereals when my dad walked in:
"Morning Lucy! Big day tomorrow..."
"Mornin' dad, yeah can't wait!"
I was born on the 15th of August 1980 in Luton, UK, and I grew up on stories of my dad's adventures in Ravenclaw, despite my mum being a muggle.
Anthony Halley decided to go to a muggle university after completing his studies at Hogwarts, where he met my mum Eleanor. It was a surprise for her when she found out magic existed, but at that time the young woman only thought that it was something even cooler about her soon-to-be husband.
Their oldest son, Max, had been sorted into Slytherin 2 years prior. I wondered what house I'd be in, since my personality was a mix of all four houses. That night, I couldn't sleep from the excitement, and ended up falling asleep only around 3 AM. The alarm went off at 11 and I ran down the stairs to find my parents already at the table with presents.
"Don't open them yet, let's wait for your brother", asked Tony.
"MAX!!! WAKE UP!", I screamed while running upstairs to his bedroom, that smelled of dirty socks and sweat and was covered in green banners. "And for gods sake open the window!"My best present had been a football jersey from my favourite team, Tottenham. I used to go watch their matches at the stadium along with my dad and Max, maybe in some years we'd be watching Quidditch matches instead. I was also enthusiastic about my cake, green decorated with footballs. But I couldn't stop checking the mailbox, afraid of the possibility of being a Squib. After lunch, lasagna - my favourite dish, I went to the pool and when I came back I saw a letter with big green letters addressed to Lucy J. Halley. I shrieked in excitement when I saw the Hogwarts crest on the back.
Dear Mrs. Halley,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on September 1st.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagallI was actually going to Hogwarts! Best birthday ever!
"What do you think about going to Diagon Alley tomorrow to buy your wand and all?" asked my dad.
"I would love that!" I exclaimed.
I probably slept even less than the previous night, imagining all of the magical shops waiting for me in the morning."Lucy! You ready?"
"Coming!" while running downstairs. I quickly put on some sneakers and waited for my dad by the front door.
We took a cab to the center of London and then entered the Leaky Cauldron. From there we entered Diagon Alley.
I was amazed by all the shops, the witches and wizards, the owls flying everywhere and the giant dragon statue on top of Gringotts. My hazel eyes were twinkling with joy, it was even better than what I had imagined from what dad had told me. I couldn't stop looking at all the storefronts, astonished by everything.
"What shall we buy first? You need some robes, a wand, a cauldron, schoolbooks, and if you want, a pet." Said my dad.
I decided on the wand as it was something I had always wanted so much and finally I could have my own.
"Let's go to Ollivanders then"
I was greeted by an old man surrounded by thousands of wand boxes
"Ah young lady, what can I do for you?" The man I guessed to be Ollivanders asked.
"Hello, I am here to get my first wand." I replied.
Garick Ollivander then proceeded to measure me from head to toe.
"Remember Lucy, the wand chooses the wizard." He finished.
I then tried out a few wands, flicking them around and breaking many stuff along the way, until finally, one felt warm in my hand and produced some light, instead of destroying stuff like the others. That's how I knew that it was the one, a cherry wood wand, 11 inches, quite bendy flexibility and a unicorn hair core. I was mesmerized with my new acquisition, and couldn't wait to do some magic at Hogwarts, in only two weeks time!
Then we went to Madam Malkins, where I got some custom made robes that fit me perfectly. I got my size 2 pewter cauldron at Potage's cauldron shop, and my school books at Flourish and Blotts. I contemplated the brooms inside the Quality Quidditch Supplies but sadly didn't get to buy anything from there. Finally, my dad suggested:
"Don't you want a pet? You've been begging us for a dog or a cat for years, now is your chance to have one."
"It says here I can bring an owl, a cat, or a toad, sadly no dogs. Though I really don't know what to choose between a cat or an owl..." I replied.
"Maybe an owl will be more useful as you can also use it to communicate, so it's not only a pet."
"Good idea, thanks dad!"
Our final stop was at Eeylops Owl Emporium. I was stunned when I walked in, by seeing hundreds of different owls all staring at me, in all shapes and sizes. I immediately fell in love with a small, soft, Flammulated owl, who had big brown eyes and was so cute! So that's the one I chose, and I called it Cookie. At the end of the day I was exhausted by the shopping but so incredibly happy with my new magical things, especially my new companion. Next stop, Hogwarts!
