It wasn't an understatement to say that Cuphead and Mugman were complete dumbasses.
Between the two brothers, they shared some courage, ambition, kindness, and a total of zero braincells. Despite this epiphany, however, the two brothers (with the help of magical projectile powers) managed to defeat the devil himself, and free all the residents of Inkwell Isle from the grasp of his soul contracts.
And through their humbling journey of battling and befriending the sleazy residents of their home, Cuphead and Mugman were finally able to relax in the comfort of their home with Elder Kettle.
They both sat parallel to each other at the edge of a dock, silently swinging their legs back and forth over the edge.
"Whadda we gonna do now?" Mugman sighed, peering over the horizon of the never-ending ocean. Whatever lay beyond it they didn't know. Or care.
It had been some time since the defeat of the devil, yet every day Mugman asked his brother, hoping for a different answer.
"I dunno." Cuphead replied automatically, though his mind was elsewhere.
"You never know..." Mugman grumbled into the palm of his gloved hand as he brought it to his face, resting on it. In the corner of his eye he half-heartedly studied his brother, whose eyes were glazed over in a blank stare at a still sea.
Mugs turned his head around to face Cuphead, focusing all his attention on his silent brother.
"Whaddya doing?" Mugman asked, though his question was still carelessly muffled by his hand.
"I dunno."
Mugs peered at Cuphead for a few moments, and when Cuphead's eyes did not meet his Mug slamed his hands on the dock they were sitting on. Cuphead jolted to attention, Mugman exclaimed in frustration his thoughts.
"Golly, Cuphead, what is wrong with you?!"
Cuphead's brow furrowed in offended confusion, but before he could retort, Mugs continued.
"You've been like this since the Devil! You don't do anything, you don't talk, and you never pay attention to me or Elder Kettle!"
Cuphead thought for a moment, and hesitated before he replied with:
"I'm jus' bored."
Mugs stared in frustration at his brother, who shrugged.
"Bored? Is that it? Is that why you've been such a squirrel?!"
Cuphead groaned as Mugman continued to confront his recent behavior.
"--Okay! Okay! Shut up Mugs! Okay? Gee, I'll tell you!" Cups finally yelled over the rants of his brother.
Mugman shut his mouth and glared at Cuphead, intently listening.
"I'm jus'--" Cuphead sighed, and reclined back onto the dock, his elbows propping him up, "--I wish our adventure wasn't over."
Mugman laid down next to him, and replied, speaking softly.
"Whaddya mean?"
"I mean--I like--and this is gonna sound stupid, but--" Cuphead also laid down, and both brothers stared at an empty blue sky, "--I feel like I found my calling, fighting bad people, magical schemes, and jus'..."
Cuphead began mumbling, "...bein' a hero and stuff."
As someone Mugman remembered as being selfish and self serving, Cuphead's comment greatly surprised him, making him sit up and stare at Cups in bewilderment. Cuphead groaned and sat up alongside him, replying to his silence.
