Magic energy, also known as Mana is something all wizards have to track of, if they ran out of the energy they won't be able to cast any kind of magic, and thus put them in danger, it is possible to go over the limit and put your own life in risk to continue casting magic but the danger is too high, only someone too stupid would go over it.
