Now, before you turn around and decide this is just some random person ranting her opinion, hear me out.
This is a girl ranting her opinion, BUT this girl is the one who reads your stories. Or doesn't read them. It really matters on how good your story is.
And one of the stories I choose not to read, is those of werewolves. Why? Because werewolves stories suck.
Now let me expand. I have nothing against werewolves, despite the fact that they are horribly overdone and seem to amass about 83% of the stories on Wattpad. It's werewolf stories that suck.
So you! You who are just about to start writing some cliche about a super hot male who is actually a werewolf! DON'T BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.
This is the cliche werewolf story: Hot male is alpha of Red Moon Pack (Or Black Moon, or Silver Moon, or Blood Moon, ect.) and finds his mate! But nooooooo, she or he is a normal human! He slowly makes her fall for him, only to be rejected when she dicovers he is actually a werewolf! Now he is dying, because werewolves can't live with their mates rejection!!! Dun dun duuuun.
That's a great plot and all, except for the fact that everyone has written that story about eight times over. Now, there might be some variables. The so called mate might be the omega of the pack and the alpha rejects him out of his overbearing ego. Only to fall in love eventually. Yada yada. Boring.
I don't want to read this same freaking story again and again! Give me a good werewolf story!
So. Now those people who are sitting there thinking, what the hell do I do now? That's all I was planning for my werewolf story. Here's some information that might give you a more original idea for a werewolf story.
1.) Wolves can take life mates..... NOTICE THE CAN! Unlike the popular belief, wolves don't mate for life out of love. It's out of convenience and friendship. Why mate with someone new when there is a wolf right next to you perfectly ready?
Wolves change mates if their partner dies or pack politics (Such as a lone wolf breeding with a pack girl and then being chased off afterwards. Or a wolf moving out of a pack and leaving his "mate" behind.). So why go through the scene of the werewolf looking into his partners eyes and suddenly knowing that this is his mate and that he'll only love him or her!
It's not accurate and it's cliche. If werewolves find mates according to their wolf, than they certainly wouldn't be a soulmate bonding type thing. So use that fact in your story! Be rebellious and drop the magical draw to mates.
2.) Packs don't telepathically communicate. I know Twilight did it, but does everyone else have to copy? Seriously, that should be all the more reason nobody puts it in. If Twilight does it, that should be a red flag.
Next, packs aren't filled with hundreds of people. Many werewolf stories stick their alpha into the the biggest(or second biggest) pack in all America, with over 200 members! Alright. That's an unreasonable size. Why?
3.) Real wolf packs have 4-10 members typically. The biggest noted pack was around 36 wolves. That's nowhere near these werewolf packs that people are spitting out. Then there is the fact that if there really was a werewolf society with over 200 members all gathered in one area, the secret of werewolves wouldn't be a secret any longer. No matter how careful the werewolves were, there would be some kind of exposure with that size. Flawed logic. Please don't put gigantic packs in your werewolf story...
4.) What is a werewolf? It is a fictional creature that is half man, half wolf. Half man. Half wolf. Not a human with an entire wolf somehow stuffed into him. That means there would be no separate entity in our werewolf's head. Werewolves, when human, would not have a wolf in their head that has an entirely different personality and thoughts. They'd be one. Not two.
No more scenes were the wolf takes over the human's actions due to instinct please!
5.) Rogues. I've seen many stories where rogues suddenly gather and attack the pack. Then they manage to kidnap the alphas mate. Whooooooa. Haven't seen that a million times(that's sarcasm...)
Rogues, which are generally pack less or lone wolves, wouldn't be rogues if they banded together. They would be a pack and no longer rogues at all! Get the facts right.... Please.
Next, rogues are typically described two ways. Mindless beasts that have lost their human side and sadistic men gathered together aiming for destruction. First let's look at these mindless beasts. If a werewolf lost their humanity, it wouldn't become some sort of feral attacking monster. Wolves are typically peaceful beings. They wouldn't pick fights with humans or packs. Even with lost humanity, the wolf wouldn't theoretically leave. Thus, they wouldn't be some blood crazed beast.
Now let's address our sadistic, but smart, rogues(cough, pack, cough.). That's more realistic. That's all I have to say. I still don't like it(because it's still a werewolf cliche), but it's your choice whether or not you have rogues in a story.Whew. There is my opinion on werewolf cliche. I hope this was helpful to those who aspire to write more original stories, but want to write about werewolves. I want to see some unique werewolf stories!!
END!
P.S. Hello all, I am FrostySquid. I'm currently going to school to become a book editor! That means if you have a story you'd like to have a bit of advice on, I'd be glad to take a peek. I'll tell you your current strong points and how you can improve.
P.S.S. This story is going to consist of ways I think the general writers can improve and stay away from cliches(A very important thing!) If you don't like my opinions(because that's all they are...) then please comment and tell me why you disagree! Or don't read. Either one.
Also, if there is a topic you'd like to suggest for me to look at and break apart, let me know. I'll look into it.
Feel free to talk to me for any reason.
