The sun was coming through the thin curtain that guarded Mary's room as she slowly stirred, drifting from her dreams. She reached out for her glasses, and slipped them on as she sat up, and was hit with yesterday's encounter of seeing Sam. Her heart was aching, as usual, about losing her boys but now it was aching for Sam as well. Though he was not the perfect husband, he still had something about him that was. That's why she fell for him. Yesterday was strange though, her mind said, he seemed different he seemed like he had changed. He didn't have the evil she always saw in his eyes he had goodness almost and care. What if he did change? Mary saw her faithful pills that caused her to spiral into her crazy mother-in-law self in Monterey, and caused her to not believe Celeste. She believed her though. She experienced abuse, she experienced what Celeste had in a way, the pills just kept Mary from saying she did, and making her seem like she didn't believe a rape and abuse victim. Now, Mary felt sick to her stomach that she did. Perry turned out the way his father did, and she felt ashamed to have denied it. She knew it would happen. Those pills are to blame. Mary grabbed them angrily and opened the cap, and poured them down the toilet. They had caused far too much trouble. This loneliness Mary has now was the chance she had to refresh herself like a computer, wipe all the things that were causing it to not work well, and updating all the things that you forget too. This was the perfect opportunity. But, little steps.
Lou wrapped her robe round her and strolled to the sofa with her coffee, and sat in the sunlight, looking into the distance. There was no sound. The sound of silence. The hum you hear when theres not a car going past, someone on tv, or even something in the kitchen beeping. It was silent. A smile grew across Mary's face. Peace. For a moment. She just about could see the sea from her window, and decided a stroll across the shoreline she knew so well would be perfect for the summer morning.
She made her way down to the path that went down to the shoreline, she wore her normal trench coat and a scarf, and fiddled with her hands as usual. In the distance her eyes caught a glimpse of someone getting into a car in the nearby car park, she walked closer and saw Sam leaning on the side of what looked like quite the expensive car. Though Mary wouldn't know as she was unaware to car brands still after being married to Sam for 12 years and all those car-shows he took her too. Mary stood back and watched a little from a distance, and smiled sweetly seeing someone she recognised, it had a comfort seeing anyone she knew, there wasn't many people who she recognised around San-Francisco or Monterey. She never really fit anywhere, she seemed to be an outcast for her whole life. Sam was looking at some form of photo, Mary went on her tippy-toes to try see the photo, but couldn't make it out. She sighed and pursed her lips, and carried on with her stroll. Her eyes closed contently as she felt the sea-breeze brush through her hair like a soft comb, and she, for once, felt her mouth stretch her cheekbones with a smile. She was at peace, she felt calm and happy. Mary hadn't felt this feeling since the last time she saw Perry. It felt unfamiliar though now, he wasn't the good boy, perfect husband, and gentleman she raised him to be. Her head filled with the video Celeste showed in court of her being kicked by him. The peace she felt disappeared in an instant as her head filled with the screams Celeste let out, those screams turned to her own, as Sam kicked her stomach in and pushed her onto the floor after she said the wrong thing. Her body almost flinched in the memory of it, and she looked back at where Sam was standing and welled up, and walked quicker.
Lou went home, alone, and grabbed a photo album of the boys, all three of them, and slowly turned each page, occasionally rubbing one of the photos and whispering or giggling. She adjusted her glasses and saw a older photo of Perry, he looked about 26 around the age he met Celeste. Celeste was holding her hand up, and in the photo next to it, her thumb covered by her fingers. It was the sign for domestic violence. Right here in the family photo album. Mary gasped and her hands began to shake at the thought she could have saved Celeste and Perry could have been alive or in prison, and Celeste would be safe. Mary whimpered and rubbed the pictures and once again felt her heart ache. She saw Perry menacingly smiling, holding celestes arm, a little too tight. Lou took her glasses off and tears fell, she shakily closed the photo album and stood up putting it away. She grabbed a picture of Perry from the side and pushed it back and turned it round. She had raised a demon and only found out 7 months after his death.
The door went suddenly, breaking Mary from her thoughts and then it went again.
"Coming!" Mary said and quickly wiped her eyes and slipped her glasses on. She opened the door.
"Hi L-Lou" Sam said softly. "Do you mind if I come in? Just two minutes I promise"
Mary gulped and saw care and love in his eyes, she rubbed her chin and looked at her feet then back at him.
"Yes, come in"
