"I would do anything for you, Piggy." said Ralph, sweetly. Piggy blushed bright red and turned away to face the glittering beach. "You know,"said Piggy, "When we get off this bloody island, and back home, I would really love to be with you more often, and we could go and hang out sometime...'' He trailed off. Ralph chuckled softly and turned to the beach as well. "I would like that, If we ever get off this island." Piggy turned, and then some dim cloud came over his face. He paused for a moment. "Jack." Ralph sighed.
"I know."
"Bloody Jack! He just couldn't stay and keep order, keep the fire going, he had to go and hunt and play! Don't he know he mustn't do this if we're to get rescued?"
"We can't just worry about it now, we have to carry on if we want to get rescued at all." Ralph shuddered at the thought of staying on the island forever without rescue. Then suddenly, he glanced over at Piggy, who was thoughtfully staring into the setting sun. Of course, he thought, there are some things that make staying here worthwhile.
It was now night, and the black trees were warped in the darkness. The first night without fire. The faint sounds of the trees rustling in the wind could be heard in the silence of night. Ralph knelt and shook Piggy awake.
"We must wake up and start to gather wood for a fire. It's freezing." Piggy groaned in the darkness.
"Can we wait until the sun rises, so we will see better?"
"Yes, that will be better." Ralph sighed uneasily and flipped back onto his back inside the shelter. Piggy laid on his back as well, and looked at the ceiling . After a while passed, a patch of leaves on the top of the shelter slid and fell to the floor at the side. Both boys jumped and laughed nervously. After a moment, Piggy shifted and said softly,
"Look."
"Huh?"
"You can see the stars."
Ralph smiled and looked up calmly. The boys laid still and started for a moment or two. "You could never get a view like this from London," Ralph said sarcastically. Piggy giggled quietly. Ralph's smile grew wider.
"Piggy."
"Yeah?"
"I can't sleep."
Ralph began to shiver from the bitter wind that blew into shelter. Piggy looked over to see Ralph's piercing blue eyes looking at the stars above, and he slowly began to move closer. Ralph saw Piggy and scuttled nearer to him until they touched. They simultaneously looked quickly to the stars.
"Piggy?"
"Yeah?"
"You'll always be with me right?"
"Yeah."
"Even if we don't make it off of this island?"
Piggy turned to Ralph and smiled.
"Always."
The next morning, Piggy and Ralph drowsily awoke and started on their daily responsibilities, Gathering materials for the shelter, harvesting fruits, caring for the littluns, and collecting fresh water.
"The noises of the jungle," Said Piggy dramatically, "frighten the littluns, but with you I ain't scared." Ralph calmly blushed and started forward toward the scar.
"Thank you, Piggy, not being scared of anything!"
"Well you are our fearless leader, Ralph." Both boys laughed for a minute then stared into each other's eyes until they forgot where they were for a little bit. They quickly blushed bright red and looked away. "Let's look for firewood," Ralph said quickly to delude the awkward moment. Piggy swiftly agreed and carried on through the forest.
"C'mon Piggy! I found a perfect spot with lots of green shrubs!" Ralph said while jogging toward the greenery. Then just as Piggy got there Ralph suddenly stopped in his tracks. "Over there." He said, pointing to a group of shrubs. Piggy slowly progressed toward the shrubs while Ralph picked up different sticks and twigs for firewood. Once Piggy got to the group of shrubs, he noticed a spot with perfect logs and sticks for a fire. Piggy crawled in just as Ralph had turned away, and suddenly he fell deep into the shrubs. He fell for what felt like an eternity until he finally hit the ground.
Piggy stumbled to his feet. He had definitely not drank enough water that day, so he was dizzy and delirious. He stood and swayed while looking at where he landed. Yet, he fell back at the fright of realizing something was behind him. It seemed to be a pig's head that someone had put on a spear wedged in a rock. The smug smile was rotting off it's dirty skull. While it was dead, it seemed very much alive. The Lord of the Flies whispered. "Hello, little pig." The echo of his voice came at Piggy from all angles. He shuddered at the sound of it. "I know. Your little secret." Piggy looked back up quickly. Don't you dare. The lord of the flies seemed to come closer. "You don't really think he loves you, you fatty? Foolish little brat." Stop it, Piggy thought. You're not real. "Not real?" The Lord of the Flies laughed again. "I am very much real, and I'm everywhere. How could you ever think you were good enough for him?" Tears swelled in Piggy's eyes, and he tried to look away. But still, The lord of the flies came closer. "Silly, Silly. Piggy has a crush." Shut it. Shut it! Piggy thought."He will never love you, you pig. Stop trying." Stop! Piggy felt the flies land on his face. The Lord of The Flies was coming closer, closer.
"Piggy?"
Ralph?"Piggy! Are you in here?"
"Gonna answer that?" Said the Lord of the Flies tauntingly.
Piggy heard the sound of leaves crashing behind him, but for some reason he couldn't look away. The Lord of the Flies' eyes closed into him. "Piggy!" Ralph said, relieved. Piggy snapped back to real life, feeling the rotting pig skin inches away from his face. "What are you doing here? Are you okay?" Piggy, shaking, stumbled backwards. He felt hot tears roll down his cheeks. My fat, pudgy cheeks, he thought. That stupid pig head is right. I am a fool... and a fatty. Piggy collapsed into Ralph's arms, crying pathetically. He couldn't see out of his good eyeglass through his tears, so Ralph watched him try to walk back as he tripped and fell again. But Ralph didn't ask, and helped Piggy walk back to camp. "Sorry I didn't collect no fire wood," Piggy said through sobs. Ralph looked at him, worried, and then looked back to camp. "It's fine," he said, "as long as you're okay." "I'm okay." Piggy sighed. For dinner that night, he decided to give his food to the littluns.
Ever since that stumble into the strange clearing, Ralph had noticed Piggy acting differently. He volunteered to go collect food and water more often, and started taking runs across the beach. Ralph also noticed that he had not been eating as much. Later, as Ralph was casually walking to get some fruits for the littluns, he found Piggy collapsed on the ground. Panting, shaking, gasping for air. Ralph stopped dead in his tracks.
"I can't," Piggy's voice echoed in Ralph's head. "Because of my asthma."
Ralph strained to remember.
"Sucks to your ass-mar."
Ass-mar.
Ralph felt his stomach drop as he started running towards Piggy, calling for help. Once he got to Piggy's side, he knelt and yelled.
"Piggy! What in the hell do you think you're doing?" Ralph felt so angry, but he couldn't stop to understand why. "Running around like this,it ain't good! You better stop or i'll-" What will I do?
"I just-" Piggy spoke hesitantly through gasping breaths.
"I'm a fatty, and you wont like a fatty. Would ya? I want you to like me, but i'm just a pig. That's why you call me by that name ain't it? I'm not enough." Piggy rolled on his back to get up, facing away from ralph.
Ralph was then, too, out of breath as he felt the tears start to sting his eyes. Yet, he quickly wiped them away. Not enough? A fatty? Don't you realize you're everything?
You will always be enough for me, no matter how you look. Is what he wanted to say but the words, not enough. The words were like daggers in Ralph's heart.
"Yes you are, you are enough, you always have been." He whispered. But piggy was already walking back to camp, too far away to hear.
