The royal rulers of Yokohama were divided into three sections.
The Star Base were the foundation, consisting of the servants, merchants who work directly under the king himself, and scholars.
The Moon Ring were the defense system and the pretty court decors and they were all female. These included the Demon Knights, those ferocious female goddesses of war, ladies-in-waiting and the handmaidens. All of them were armed, and specially trained in combat, known for their beauty, courage and intelligence.
The Sun Circle is the royal family itself. There was the King, Mori Ougai. He raised the Princess Nakahara Chūya on his own ever since his former guardian, a sorcerer named Arthur Rimbaud, died, along with his own daughter, Princess Elise.
It was a fun rumor everyone seemed to believe that King Mori had a love affair with the head of the royal guard and the general over all his armies, Fukuzawa Yukichi. Where the king himself wasn't so popular with his own subjects because he was scary and an a**, Fukuzawa was more popular because of his courteous and fair personality.
Fukuzawa raised a boy in the Department of Mystery and Security, Edogawa Ranpo, and personally trained Kunikida Doppo as the future heir to his position as general.
Kunikida was fortunate he wasn't the prince, who had to have his suitors chosen; he was free to love, court and marry whom he pleased. The woman he had set his eyes, mind and heart upon was just a station away from him.
He first met Sasaki when he, Fukuzawa and a battalion were sent to rid the country from the iron fist of the Azure King, a mere rebel. He was one of the few chosen to assist Fukuzawa in smoking the Azure King out of his hideout.
When he heard rushing water nearby and found the floor wet, Kunikida chose to investigate further. He found a woman, almost naked, drowning in a sealed glass tank full ot the brim. The room in which he found her was flooded to his ankles.
With difficulty, Kunikida broke the tank open and freed the woman, administering a little mouth-to-mouth before giving her his coat.
Her name was Sasaki Nobuko. And her life was the furthest thing from normal and happy.
She was just a normal schoolteacher when the Azure King's eye fell upon her. He made her his consort, though not his queen, his tool for spreading terror so the other territories will fall to submission.
They called her the Azure Messenger.
The Azure King claimed to love Sasaki, but his love, according to her, was more of possession than of real affection. She was his bedwarmer, his slave, nothing more.
"Come with me," Kunikida told her. "You'll never have to be anyone's slave, you can restart the life you want. You can be happy again."
Sasaki accepted the offer, and Kunikida took her back with him to Yokohama. King Mori made her a lady-in-waiting not only because of her intellect but also so she could defend herself should any time of danger arise. And she was free to teach in one of the kingdom's universities.
Kunikida knew from the moment she met his eyes as he wrapped his coat around her that Sasaki Nobuko was his ideal woman. Not only was she pretty and intelligent, she was gentle, high-spirited and idealistic. They even shared some of the same ideals!
But he also knew he wasn't worthy of her, he wasn't ready to court her. Not yet. He didn't know when he will be ready, but he knew he still has a long way to go.

I ship Kunikida and Sasaki bc that's the ship in real life, and the guy loved her so much he was totally heartbroken for life when they divorced. My image of the anime version of the ship is Sasaki is broken from her previous love life with the Azure King, and Kunikida becomes her savior, happily ever after for the two of them, hooray
Next chapter: i close my eyes, Atsushi's backstory and her family's debut. In this story, Shibusawa is her father (I see him as Atsushi's father figure ever since I watched Dead Apple, NO ONE CAN MAKE ME SWING THE OTHER WAY, LA!), but I read fics with the two as father and son, and they're so cute fufu.
