The box was covered in nondescript brown paper. But when she untied the string, the wrapping seemed to fall away like leaves from a soft autumn wind. It revealed a creation of moonlight and stardust; a mystical blend of white and gold. She opened it; and time suddenly slowed.
Inside, lay a porcelain ballerina dressed in a cobalt dress and a white crown. The girl wound the key three times, and the doll began to dance. It twirled and pirouetted. It jumped and crouched low. It was the prettiest thing she had ever seen. She watched the beautiful ballerina dance—didn't want her to stop. She heard someone call her, but she couldn't answer them. She didn't want to. She wanted to sit and watch her ballerina dance.
Suddenly, someone shook her, and the box fell from her hand. She looked up to meet the eyes of her sister; "It's time for dinner. Seriously, it's just a silly old ballerina."
She frowned. Dinner? Had she been watching her ballerina twirl for three hours? But as she stumbled down the stairs and towards the dinner table; her heart was already devising ways to get back. Back to her box of mischief and magic. Back to the ballerina that could dance forever.
