Amber was born to her parents when they were both only 16. Her mother's mom, Glinda, had taken care of her until she was about five years old. In this time, her mom finished high school and had started her college education while working a part time job. After Janice, Amber's mother, turned twenty-one she was able to take extra classes online and finish her degree early. However, during the five years in which she lived with her grandmother Amber had went through many important points in her life. She had started kindergarten and finished pre-school. However, Janice was not completely absent in Amber's life. Every day, Janice would meet with Amber at Glinda's house for an hour or two to chat with her about her day at school.

The year Amber turned five was the first year she stayed with her mom for Christmas. Amber's mom had become a school teacher and Mark (her dad) was a truck driver. He was rarely around and when he was he usually stayed to himself. Janice and Mark eventually got married right after Amber turned five. Although, this marriage was not very long lasting. Matter of fact, the day Amber turned six her parents separated. This separation would eventually lead to a divorce. Mark would actually come out and say he did not want anything to do with Amber. This was one of the biggest life altering moments of Amber's life. After the divorce, Janice would have multiple boyfriends before Amber turned 15.

In the summer before Amber's sophomore year of high school Janice would marry her boyfriend of six months. Amber did not like this very much and her grandmother, Glinda, did not like him but she had moved away about a month after they got together because her husband died and she wanted to be as far from the house he bought as possible. Amber refused to attend the wedding at first but she ended up doing so to spite her mother's new husband. A few months later Amber and her mother ended up getting into an argument about her mother's husband, James.
