‚What do you think you're doing?'

Taegeum was towering above me, his glasses reflecting the light in a way that I couldn't  see through them anymore. He looked almost scary.

‚This door is never to be opened by you.' He said, his voice serious, like making a command.

‚What's behind it?' I still asked as I couldn't let go of my curiosity. It was greater than my nervousness.

‚Just an old cellar. But the staircase is unstable, you could break through and hurt urself...' he explained slowly. 'So you should never go down there ok?' His voice seemed back to normal. His eyes also visible again, looking at me in their usual kind and fatherly way.

I nodded taking my hand away from the rusty knob.

‚Will you fix it some day?'

‚Maybe one day, as for now, we don't need a cellar, so it might just stay like this a while longer.' He smiled at me. ‚Just pretend here is no door, alright?'

I nodded again, then got back on the couch with the book in my hands, but my mind never really left that door. Maybe the thought of an old cellar was just very interesting to me. Just think what you could find down there. Maybe Taegeum had left some interesting stuff -hidden treasures- in that basement before the staircase broke, or even the former houseowner. I would die to take a look, even just a small peek.

Lost in the book's world, the time in my world seemed to go by very fast, that I was after dinner already going up to my room again. I walked along the creaking corridor.

Maybe I should ask Taegeum if he could install another lamp somewhere, because all I could do was walk straight towards the window without seeing my legs and feet moving across the floor. Everything was dark around me. At the window I turned right and into my room, which gladly had some more light than the corridor. I changed into my sleep wear, pulled open the curtains, so the moonlight could shine through the window, switched of the lights then crawled into my bed, pulling the blanket up to my nose. I closed my eyes, only listening to the peaceful sounds of the night, that relaxed my body until I fell finally asleep.

...

In the middle of the night however I jumped up in bed. The sounds that had been so peaceful before had changed into something horrible.

I heard banging and rustling, cries where I wasn't sure if they were human's or animal's, I heard roars that made shivers crawl up my spine. I couldn't locate the source of the noises. Where did they come from? Was I still sleeping? Dreaming?

I shut my eyes and pressed my hands to both my ears, trying to block out everything. This wasn't a dream, I was bright awake.

After a few minutes, I carefully took my hands away again. Everything had gone silent as before, though I still had a feeling as if the noises lingered in my ears, having left an impression you couldn't forget about.

‚What was that just now?'

Did I only imagine it? Nervously I looked around the room and out of the window a last time before I laid back down again, when I didn't see anything, hoping to sleep till the morning this time. Gladly, I was lucky. Though a well rested feeling was something else...

‚Last night I..' I said at the breakfast table. ‚I heard strange noises, they sounded really...' There just was no fitting word to describe them... ‚horrible..' was the only thing that came into my mind.

‚Strange noises?' Taegeum asked looking up from his rice bowl. I nodded.

‚Well that was probably from... outside.' He explained. ‚I told you there are things living in that forest. But don't worry, as long as you're inside they won't harm you. They can't'
