Present
Ava
Anger burned inside me as I looked at them. Rosa and Dave were sitting together in the garden, talking and laughing. He was laughing with his girlfriend. Since the day I came here, he hasn't smiled at me, not even once. Nine years ago, he was crazy about me. He used to care about me. But now, I meant nothing to him, not even a human. He was treating me like trash, like the dirt of his house, and it bothered me. He didn’t like me; it was okay, but at least he could treat me with respect.
“You don’t deserve anyone’s love!”
“You’ll die alone! No one will come to see you, Ava!”
“No one will love you!”
I clutched the glass harder, remembering all those harsh words.
“How’s the baby?” Dave asked while caressing Rosa’s belly lovingly. “Tomorrow I’ll take a day off for your regular check-up after that we’ll go to your favorite Mexican restaurant. How’s your nausea? Do you feel any better?”
Rosa smiled, placing her hand on his. “Feeling better but still this baby is giving me a hard time.”
I downed the rest of the wine and slammed the glass, glowering at them.
“You’ve got to be kidding me?!” I heard Tim’s loud voice. I twisted my head to him. “You’ve drunk the entire bottle of wine?” He said in disbelief.
I raised my brows and looked back at the empty bottle of wine which was on the counter. “Ugh, this I didn’t even realize when it finished.” I grinned ear to ear. “Do you know where I would get more?”
I quit smoking but I could not avoid alcohol. Not after I had so much in my mind and heart. Alcohol would harm my body but at least it would help me forget the reality just for a moment. Last night Dave’s every word stabbed my heart. He had made up his mind that he would break my soul and yes; he was doing a great job. I shook my head; I was not that bad they were treating me like that. I had made so many mistakes in the past but I had my reason I was helpless. If it wasn’t for my mother, I would never marry him.
I jolted when the glass shattered into pieces.
“Ava!” Tim quickly ran to me and held my hand, examining it. “Fuck, you’re bleeding.”
I looked down and blood was dripping through my hand. A sliver of glass pierced my skin. This pain was nothing compared to what I had been feeling in my heart.
“God, Dave, what are you doing?!” I heard Rosa’s cheerful voice. My head snapped at them as Dave was tickling her, and it made her laugh.
“Are you lost? Where are you looking?” Tim growled and followed my gaze at them. “Do you think he gives a shit!”
I quickly yanked my hand back. “I’m okay.”
Without another word, he scooped me up on his shoulder. “Tim, what are you doing?” I cried. “Put me down, idiot.”
“You are drunk,” he said and headed toward the stairs. “You can’t walk.”
“Tim, when did you come here and where are you taking her?” I heard Rosa ask.
“She is drunk. I'm taking her to the room,” he replied.
Ugh, I felt sick I needed to throw up. “Tim put me down... I’m going to puke right on you, dammit!”
He quickly took me to the nearest bathroom and put me down.
Immediately, I dashed to the bathroom and threw up, coughing hard. Ugh, I was over drinking?
