The darkness was closing in, a never-ending swarm of anger and doubt. Wide eyes stared darkness in the eyes, the left blue, the right one glowing.

"Boruto," the voice whispered. "Do you have what it takes to overcome the darkness that is within your own mind?"

Lips split into a smile, revealing rotten, blackened teeth. A giggle escaped the mouth of his worst nightmare.

"Yes," Boruto whispered. "I can. Just let me go. Please."

"Why should I?" The voice whispered. It leaned forward, lips cracking from the width of the smile. "The last time I let you go, you got away from me. But that's okay. You always come back."

Boruto's lips quivered. He wanted to wake up like he did last night. But he'd discovered that he couldn't.

    He couldn't wake up.

He looked his nightmare in the face. It was strange, how similar it looked to him. Spiky blond hair and blue eyes. The eyes were dark and lifeless, the hair limp, but Boruto was curious.

He wanted to wake up again. To be free.

Why couldn't he be free from himself?
