"Cathy!" I yelled. "Give me back my phone!"
"Not until I see who you were texting! I bet it was your boyfriend!" She taunted. Ha! Yeah right!
"I don't have a boyfriend!"
"Then why won't you let me know who you're texting with?"
"I already told you! It was Marie!"
"Yeah right!" She scoffed.
"Why are you so obsessed with me having a boyfriend? You're nine!"
"And your thirteen!"
"Way to state the obvious!" I said rolling my eyes. "I'm way too young to have a boyfriend. And you know mom would flip if she knew I did,"
"Who's going to tell her?"
"Hmmm, let me guess, you!"
"What?"
"Cathy, you can't keep a secret!"
"What? Name one time!"
I rolled my eyes. "How about the incident when you found out a boy was flirting with me, or when I was planning on surprising mom with a watch, or when-"
"Fine I get the point! But I won't tell this secret,"
"It's not a secret if I really don't have a boyfriend!"
"Then let me see who you're texting!"
"I told you it's Marie!"
"Then why won't you let me see the conversation,"
"Because I'd like to have some privacy!"
"So you were talking about a boy?"
"Cathy," I drawled.
"What now?"
"I swear I will delete 'fashion icon' from my phone if you don't give it back by the time I count to five. One,"
"You wouldn't!"
"Two,"
"Please!"
"Three,"
"Fine. Here you go," she said as she handed me back my phone.
"Thank you. Now go arrange your stuff for school tomorrow,"
"Ugh! Did you have to remind me that today was the last day of the holiday?"
"It was either me or mum and I know you don't want to hear her nagging,"
"Good point,"
************
"Get up! Get up! Get up!" Cathy yelled jumping on my bed.
"I'm up!" I said completely annoyed. I am so not a morning person. And it doesn't help when today is the first day of school.
"Why is it so cold?" I asked shivering.
"Because it's five in the morning. Duh!"
"I'm taking a shower,"
"Hey! I was first in line!"
"Well you should have thought of that before waking me up!"
"But mom said I had to wake you up!" She whined.
"But you take so long in the bathroom!" I whined back.
"It's only fair that I go first!"
Pfft! Fair. I rolled my eyes. "Fine! I'll go have breakfast first while you take a shower,"
"On second thought, I'll just have breakfast first,"
Good. I headed for the bathroom and took a quick shower and later changed into my uniform. White blouse, black skirt, white socks, black sweater and of course black shoes. Without forgetting the black tie of course. You know, I hate uniform a lot, but now that I think about it, it's better than trying to figure out what I'm going to wear, bearing in mind that it has to be cute, and I just got no time for that.
I went down for breakfast and saw that my sister was still eating breakfast, and watching TV. Totally unadvisable if you ask me.
"Hey. Go take a shower. You need to get ready remember?"
"Yeah yeah. Don't change the channel!" She said. Oh totally. I have no problem watching 'Shimmer and Shine'.
"Fine. Just go. I don't want to be late because of you!"
She came out one hour later fully dressed. "Grab your bag now. Mom! We're off to school!"
"Bye girls!" Mom waved from the kitchen.
It's been my mom, my sister, my brother and I since I was four. Dad left and never came back. Yeah, that does a lot to a kid. Especially if that kid cough me cough thought she was very close to her daddy. My brother, Steve, however didn't look that affected by it. But I know he was just being strong. He was like twelve when dad left. And he had to take care of us when mom was at work.
Cathy was still a baby so she didn't get to know our dad. Come to think of it, neither did I, I guess. There was even a point in my life where I thought that he left because I was too cry baby-ish. Because who would leave just leave his family without a second thought? But I later realized that he was just being a jerk. Who just leaves his family and never make contact, like, ever?
"Hey Aura," Brianna greeted, effectively knocking me out of my trance.
"Hey Patty, Brianna" I waved back. I looked towards Cathy and saw that she was with her friends so I started walking with mine.
"Can you guys believe it's the first day of school?" I asked still not believing that we were returning to school.
"Can you believe that it's our last year in Primary school?" Brianna asked. Now that, was a real question. Did I believe that we were already in eighth grade?
"Nope," I said popping the 'p'. This is reality. I had the chance to fool around and I did. Well, I didn't fool around much because I still have high school to look forward to, but still, this year is one of the most important in my life. We have Finals this year. They'll get to determine what High School I go to. It'll all determine my future and whether or not I become a pediatrician.
"Calm down, Aura. I can hear the gears turning in your head from here," Patty said snapping me out of my trance. I seem to have a lot of those lately.
We entered the school gates. Everything seemed new yet unchanged. Huh. Two months will do that to you.
"Good morning, Aura, Brianna, Patricia," Mr George greeted. If there has ever been a teacher in my life that I hated, it would be him. You know love at first sight, this is hate at first sight. And believe me, it goes both ways.
"Good morning sir," I greeted smiling sweetly. After being a teacher's pet for five years, I know how to be a suck up. I may hate it, but I'd rather he not always lash out his hate on me.
"I hope the two of you," he looked at me and Brianna, "are ready for your duties this year,"
I just nodded in response as did Brianna. He left not long after.
"Aura, can I borrow a pen?"
"I thought I told you to pack yours last night!"
"I forgot! So, can I borrow one?"
"Yeah, sure," I said as I pulled out a ball pen from my bag.
"Thanks sis,"
"Your welcome. Now go to class. Don't want to be tardy,"
"Who says tardy anymore?"
"Who forgets to pack for their first day of school?" I retorted.
"It's a pen! Get over it!"
