They sit on the couch across from me, my eyes darting back and forth between them. I pull my hoodie sleeves over my hands, fidgeting in my chair.
"So... I'm a little confused. I'm not really sure... about anything. Who are you? How'd you know I would be here?"
They glance at each other, and I take the time to let my eyes wander over their figures. The one on the right has beautiful curls sprouting from his head, his pearly smile complimenting his dark skin. My eyes wander down to his hoodie covered body, and I can't help but wonder what lies beneath those clothes. The one on the left has a shorter haircut, and I let my eyes linger on the beard he's growing. I lean back in my chair, pulling my knees up to my chest.
They both turn back to me and I let out a nervous breath. They both have the same piercing brown eyes, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out they're twins.
"We know your mother, We grew up together. We had a falling out a while ago and only just recently got back in touch. She told us about your... situation and we wanted to help." The one on the left says.
"But-" I pause. "Why? I don't even know who you two are, and you don't know me."
"We knew you. Unfortunately we haven't seen you since your father's funeral, and you were only a little girl back then." The one on the right speaks up this time, and I feel my breath catch in my throat.
"You knew my father?" They glance at each other again.
"We actually introduced your parents, in some twisted way. Your mother lived next door to us and your father was a friend of our older brother."
"If your mother hadn't taken us under her wing, then you never would have been born."
I sit back in my chair, trying to process everything. It's silent for a minute before I speak up again.
"I still don't get why you want to help. I don't even know your names or how old you are."
They look at each other, the one on the left looking amused. He's the one that speaks up.
"I'm Jackson, this is Dallas. We're 28." I slowly nod, my eyes flickering between them. Jackson has a beard, Dallas has longer hair. Not too hard to remember.
"We want to help you just because we can. You deserve to have a normal life, and we can help while you get back on your feet." Dallas speaks up, his voice soft with care.
"And what would I have to do to?" They share a lingering glance, like they're surprised I asked.
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"You wouldn't have to do anything. No strings attached. So... what do you say?" Jackson's tone is firm, and I let the question hang in the air before muttering an "okay." They smile at me and I stand up.
"I just need to get changed and talk to Scarlett..." I trail off, looking past them at the staircase.
"We'll wait here, then we can help you get packed up."
I smile and nod. "Okay, cool."
I head towards the stairs, swearing I feel two pairs of eyes on me as I go.
