His heart always had beat for her, he just didn't know it before. He sees the girl he loves being victimised by the guy he hates and it breaks his heart. Yet he doesn't do anything, he just stands there and watches.
They used to be best friends, always hanging out and ignoring the other kids who said they were boyfriend and girlfriend, but Sam couldn't care less, he liked being called Lana's boyfriend.
And now he's here. Seventeen, six years after he had left her. Watching her eating her lunch whilst Brayden and co. tease her and laugh at her and pull her hair and put their hands in her food and steal it too. His head starts hurting, watching made him feel like he was dying.
Without thinking, he picks up a handful of icky canteen spaghetti bolognese, walks over to the table and smacks Brayden right on his cheek, splattering the pasta everywhere.
Lana stands up in bewilderment and stares at the sight: red sauce all over Brayden's face, pasta on the other bullies' hair, Sam lifting Brayden up by the collar, Brayden's friend Andrew approaching Sam with a clenched fist. Before Andrew swings at Sam, Lana grabs Sam's sleeve and drags him out of the silent canteen full of curious high-schoolers watching the event closely. Brayden drops down on the floor, struggling for air since Sam had pulled him up by the collar and choking him.
"What were you thinking Sam!?" Lana whisper-shouts once they were in a supply closet out of the sight of the teenagers.
"No 'thank you'? No 'Sam you're my saviour, I miss the days when we were friends'?" Sam questions embarrassed with Lana's unpredicted reaction.
"Why didn't you do that in year 7? Why did you wait until year 12? You decide to do this a year before we leave high school! And why did you abandon me when I started getting bullied? You were my ONLY friend. If you expect a thank you or our strong bond to be restored then man, you've got it wrong." Lana angrily rambles, undoubtedly hurting not only his feelings but also her feelings, how she doesn't want to be so mean to her (ex) best friend but it's the right thing to do after all he had done to her.
"I'm sorry. At first I thought they would just move on but they didn't. I abandoned you because I was scared that I would also be targeted. I was so dumb, so oblivious, to how lucky I was to have a friend that would love me and that I would love with all of my body: every inch, every nook and cranny, every piece of my heart." Sam apologises, regretting the six years he had left her to be bullied.
"I need to go now, the bell is going soon." Lana says sadly, she wanted so bad to tell Sam that she still loved him and that she forgave him and that he shouldn't feel bad but for once in her life, she went with her soul instead of her heart.
She leaves the supply room as well as her childhood friend Sam, trying her hardest to keep all her emotions it, trying not to break on the outside as she had already been broken to the limit on the inside.
