John McCrae was a poet and a brave man
He was in the Great War since it began,
He helped soldiers who were hurt
Working through the mud and dirt,
He was a gentleman.
In the trenches he would toil,
Through cold and rain and muddy soil
Uncomfortable and homesick,
But for his friend Alexis.
Friend, fellow soldier and inspiration,
They were together in their deprivation
Grateful for each new dawn,
John missed Alexis when he was gone
All his fellow soldiers John beheld with veneration,
And so “In Flanders’ Fields” was written.
