Janie Hammons is my name, though I wish my last name was different. I wish I was never born under the name Hammons. But I digress. I was born to Katrina Court and George Hammons. My mother had me when she was quite young and died during child birth. So it is just me and my father. George Hammons.

"Janie Grace Hammons you get your filthy arse down here!" my father shouted. We lived in a flat in Ireland, where I was born. Where my mother had died. I quickly stood on the cold hard floor and rushed down stairs. My father stood by the fire place a letter in hand.

"This came for you." he said, his voice like ice. He threw the letter at me and I caught it before it hit the ground. I quickly opened it and read its' contents.

Dear Janie Hammons,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You will the list of required materials at the end of this letter. We expect your reply no later than August 1st. We are pleased to have you here at Hogwarts, if you choose to accept. School begins September 15th.

Sincerely,

Minerva McGonagall

Head of Gryffindor House

Deputy Headmistress

Janie looked up from the letter only to see her father's retreating figure down the hallway into the back of the house. She could feel her breath hitch in the back of her throat as she hoped that he was not going back there to get what she thought he was going to get. Janie looked back down at the letter, folded it up and shoved it in her pants pocket. When Janie looked up, she noticed her father standing in the door way, looking at her. She looked down to his hands that were situated in front of him. They were holding a belt made out of leather. Janie's eyes travel back up to her father's face. His face cold, and showing no emotion. All the emotion that he had was drained from him the day her mother died giving birth to her.

"What was in the letter?" her father questioned.

"Nothing, Father. I promise. Just junk mail." Janie answered.

"Wrong answer." her father hissed, moving from the door way and towards her. The belt hanging loose from his left hand. Janie felt herself shrink into herself, like she always did when her father began to beat her. Janie closed her eyes as her father stepped closer and raised the brown leather belt in the air. Within minutes her father struck her. Her cheek burning where the belt landed. Tears threatened to spill but she quickly wiped them away, not wanting her father to see her weakness.

"Lie to me again and you will never see the light of day again. Got it?" her father hissed, his face within an inch of hers. Janie nodded, not trusting her voice. "Now go to your room, I don't want to see your face for the rest of the day."

Janie bolted down the hallway, not looking back as she knew her father had a smug look on her face. When she got to her room, Janie pulled a suitcase out from underneath her bed. She laid it on top of her bed and began to fill it with all the clothes she owned which was not much. Only three shirts, three pairs of pants, three bras, three pairs of underwear three pairs of socks and one pair of tennis shoes. She went into the bathroom that was connected to her room and grabbed her brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, as well as her mouth wash, and soap she used for bathing and washing her face. She grabbed her two towels and two wash cloths out of the cabinet and shoved them all into her suitcase. It was July 20th and she knew that it might be to early to walk right on into Hogwarts, but she needed to get out of her father's house.

She looked around her room and noticed that her old teddy bear that her mother had bought her before she died was sitting on the chair that sat near her only source of light, the window. She smiled faintly and grabbed it as well and shoved it into the bag.

Janie lightly opened the window, grabbed her bag and exited the house through the window. Janie thanked Merlin that there was only one story to this house so it made for an easy get away. She shut the window from the outside and ran like there was no tomorrow she had no idea where she was going but she just knew that she had to leave and never look back.

A/N: Comment below with your thoughts!! I didn't want to go into to much detail because I didn't want anyone to relieve anything that might be triggered by a more detailed abuse scene. I hope you all like this prologue and stick around for the chapters to come:) Have a great night!

Also the picture associated with this chapter is Carey Mulligan who I think will protray Janie Hammons best!!
