Janie's POV:
I stand on the grass, feeling the twigs between my toes as the breeze makes my hair sway. My eyes are closed a small smile playing at my lips.
"Are you going to go in or are you just going to stand there like a maniac?" Marlene McKinnon, a girl with hopes so far beyond herself, smiles as I open my eyes for the first time in what seems like forever. Marlene with her shoulder length blonde hair stood before me, her blue eyes shinning bright.
"I think she is to chicken to go in." Remus Lupin, a boy who has always shown me kindness even when his friends did not, has a wicked look in his eyes as I shift my eyes from Marlene to Remus. I shake my head slowly as Remus came towards me. "Yeah she is definitely chicken."
"She is a Slytheirn, and we all know they are known for being chickens." Marlene mocked.
"If I was a true Slytherin, I would not be friends with the two of you." I retorted, locking my eyes onto the water before me.
"Then get in the water!" Remus urged, pointing towards where the water shone in the mid afternoon sun. The smile that was playing on my lips faltered as I heard the oh so annoying voice of James Potter and Sirius Black.
"You know what I think I will." I stated flatly, moving one foot in front of the other, making a quick dive into the water head first, not coming up for several minutes.
Remus's POV:
Janie Hammons, a girl with so many secrets, breaks the surface of the water. Her hair a wet mess all around her face. I fight to control the laugh that wants to break through and escape my mouth. I felt a hand clasp onto my shoulder making me break my concentration.
"What do you three think you are doing all the way out here?" James questioned, his face one of seriousness though I could tell this was all a big joke to him. Everything was a joke to James and Sirius. Why? No one really knew for sure. Without even looking I could tell Janie was rolling her eyes and going back beneath the water. She always rolled her eyes at the pair in front of me. That and always stormed off, to get away from their ever so many jokes at her expense.
"Anyone want to go in and get some dinner, I'm starving." Marlene suddenly said, as she pulled her jacket closer to herself. It was September after all. I noticed Janie was already half way up to the castle, by the time any of us noticed her. Marlene sighed to herself as she began to walk after Janie. James, Sirius and I following suit after her.
Janie's POV:
I find myself wedged between Regulus Black (the only Black I really cared for as a person) and Avery with Mulciber sitting on the other side of him as usual. Severus sat across from me, twirling his fork in his food. I couldn't help myself as I stared at him as he was unaware. I pushed my plate away, barely eating anything I had on it.
"You want to go back to the common room?" Regulus whispered, I found myself nodding yes to his question. Most people thought that Regulus and I were an item, but truth was we were nothing even close to that. I mean I like Regulus as a friend nothing more. I stood from my spot and began to walk out of the Great Hall with Regulus in toe.
"You know if you want to sleep with him you should just ask him!" a voice called after us, not long after we exited the Great Hall. I turn around to find Lucius Malfoy and of course Narcissa and Bellatrix Black standing near the entrance to the Great Hall.
"And you know if you want to get in Narcissa's pants you should have the decency to ask first before you just put them on!" I hissed, then moving along. I hated being in Slytherin with them, they are the reason we have the reputation we do.
"What is your deal today?" Regulus asked, as we made our way to the dungeon. "You've been acting strange all day."
"I know, and for that I am sorry. It is just with O.W.L.s coming up in the near future and all the extra course work Professor's are assigning I am overwhelmed." I explained, hoping Regulus understood. The smile on his face seemed to say otherwise. "What are you thinking?"
Regulus shock his head and moved towards the staircase that lead to the girls and boys dormitories. If you took a left you went to the boys dormitory and then the right you went to the girls dormitory.
"What you keeping secrets now? I thought we were closer than that!" I shouted as Regulus went out of sight. "Dunderhead!"
Severus's POV:
She sat across from me, barely touching her food. I couldn't help but notice how Regulus looked at her, how he always looked at her. A part of me was angry that he looked at her like she was just a piece of meat that he could chew. The other part of me was jealous of how closed they seemed. My mind went to the first time we meet.
We were on the platform waiting for the train to arrive, and Lily had noticed her standing by herself with only what she could carry. Lily had a concerned look on her face as she moved towards the girl. And naturally where ever Lily went I followed.
"My name is Lily Evans and this is Severus Snape, what is your name?" Lily asked as soon as we had gotten into ear shot.
"Janie Hammons." the girl said.
"Would you like to join us in a cabin?" Lily asked. "We don't bite." Janie nodded shifting her bags onto her shoulder and cradling a jacket in her arms.
After that Janie, Lily and I seemed to be inseparable. Until one day last year. It was when Janie and I were sitting around a tree not that far from the castle near the Black Lake. She was drawing while I was reading a book on potions. Before to long Sirius Black, James Potter and the rest of their nitwit friends found us and started making fun of me and her both. I had noticed Lily and Marlene McKinnon coming up the way and naturally I had tried to defend myself, but could not.
"Can you be any more annoying, Black?" Janie hissed as Sirius had knocked her stuff out of her hands. Sirius had only laughed and tried to saunter his way into Janie's good gracious. "Don't even think about it!"
"Why don't you go pick on someone else, Potter!" Lily spat, earning James's attention.
"Because if I pick on Snivellous and his little pathetic friend then I could be close to you Evans." James retorted.
"I don't need your help." I had spat at Lily not long after, "I don't need help from a filthy Mudblood." Lily had grown quite before stomping away with Marlene in toe, I felt my heart being ripped out at that exact moment.
"Well looks like you have done it now Snivellous." James hissed, I had my eyes glued to Lily's retreating figure on that day. Not realizing that what I did and what I said not only ended one friendship but injured another. Though Janie still hangs around, I can tell that out friendship is strained. Possibly forever.
