The rounded table positioned in the middle of the stone room was the place where decisions were made. It was where they had decided he was the best fit. It was where they had decided that they were going to attack the King and his ability-possessing allies.

This was not the outcome they had planned for, but it was a good one, nonetheless. They believed the King to be dead, and he was. King Gale had died at the hands of a test subject—Chen. There was no possible way for him to have survived. There would've needed to have been a miracle in order for that to happen.

But they did not care that the King was dead. They had secretly hoped for such an outcome, for now they could pursue their plan. Now, they wouldn't need the girl.

They had taken her from the square where the fight had occurred. She'd been drugged, unconscious. She was limp as she was carried in, and in that way, she almost had appeared normal; but they all knew otherwise. She was the one who had terrorized a whole Kingdom. She deserved to die, yet they wouldn't kill her.

They knew he wouldn't want that, and they wanted to remain on his good side. For now.

The nobles of Crostia had decided long ago that King Gale was unfit to rule. They had heard rumors earlier that he had given up his chance of an alliance with Quentine, and had become disgusted. Truth be told, they were only waiting for a reason to fight against their King, and, now given an opportunity, had acted upon their hatred. They'd received an anonymous message saying the King had declined the alliance through marriage because of his love for another.

Because of his love for the monster who'd destroyed a Kingdom.

He loved his enemy, and so he needed to be silenced. His opinion no longer mattered in the eyes of the nobles, even if he was King. One had tried to go against them and warn the King, but he'd been silenced, also. The nobles had a way of doing that, especially with their connection to the others who could do inhuman things with only their minds.

They had allied with Colton and his people a week after the ball, and from there, they'd devised the plan to get rid of the King. The nobles believed that there was a man far more suited to rule, and that was Colton himself. With King Gale gone, Colton would be able to take over Crostia and claim the throne as his own. Of course, the nobles would receive benefits from this plan. They would have immunity in the Kingdom. Every illegal act they now committed would be pardoned, and they would have a say in almost every decision made. That was what they'd agreed upon, at least.

Colton would rule, and then, when the time came, they would take Ariane to the guillotine. They would be heroes.

She would no longer be there to stop them, and then, all of her other strange friends would lose hope. They would turn themselves in and become Colton's loyal servants. It was perfect. Those with abilities would be placed under watch by the most powerful of them all, and Crostia would be even more famous than it'd ever been before.

King Gale was dead, Ariane was in their hands, and Colton would reign.

It was all going according to plan.
