Lizzie's P.O.V.

It's been a week since I have moved from Davidson, North Carolina to Chino Hills, California. My neighbor is loud and annoying when he's partying with his friends. Meanwhile, I've been trying to study. My phone rings. "Lizzie, hi, just checking on you sweetie, make sure you have everything you need, lock your new security system, check your security cameras at all times..." My mom blurts when I answer. "Mom, I know." I say. "We love you, we just want you safe. It's the first time you're not going to be with us during the purge." she babbles on. "I understand, but calm down, I'm going to be alright. Love you." I convince her. "Love you."

*1 hour later*

I lock everything, grab my phone, making sure it's 100 percent charged, and slip it in my back pocket, just in case. Lately, I've seen my neighbor stare at me, he's everywhere. Feeling creeped out, I call my best friend, Mia, to check on her. "Hello?" she answers. "Hey, Mia!" I say, laughing.
"So are you ready for the annual purge?"
"Yup, locked and loaded. How about you?" she says.
"Same."
"Good."
"I was just checking on you. See you after the purge, if I'm not dead." I say.
"Don't say that! We are going to survive this!" she says.
"See you in almost 12 hours" I say.
"See you."
I decide to retie my Converses, mainly because I'm bored. I check the clock. It's 7 o'clock. The announcement goes on. "This is not a test. This is your emergency broadcast system announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Weapons of class 4 and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. Police, fire, and emergency medical services will be unavailable until tomorrow morning until 7 a.m., when The Purge concludes. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn. May God be with you all."

Then the siren goes on. I decided I go hide, just in case, and I run to the hiding place I discovered the day after I moved in. It was the closet in the basement. I put my phone on silent and the brightness on dim, so I don't get caught. I check the security cameras, only to see a few men in masks coming down my neighborhood, stopping at my house.

SHIT, here they come. I thought. My heart was beating faster and faster as they get closer to the door. Then I heard a crash. That's when I knew I was screwed.
