                                           ~Chapter One~

                                    I Prefer Servant Service

“Gwendolyn! Can you watch Emma Rose while I run to the shop?” Mistress Wood, Gweni’s mother image, called into Gweni’s small living quarters. “Of course Mistress Wood, where is Marry Ann and Carrie Sue?” Gweni stepped out of her room and into the kitchen, where little 5 years old Emma Rose was coloring on the ground. “At Goodwife Cyrus’s home, playing with her daughter little Vixen.” Mistress Wood shut the door.

Gweni smiled, pulling her soot covered goggle onto the top of her head. “Emma Rose, pull down your skirt! If mother sees you like that, she’ll whoop you!” Gweni looked down at Emma Rose with a stern face. “They are just bloomers! Not my bear bottom. You don’t were a skirt!” The tiny girl stood up, only reaching Gweni’s mid thigh, protesting.

"Well, that's correct, I don't wear a skirt, but I don't run around in just my bloomers!" Gweni picked Emma Rose up, swinging her over her shoulder. Emma Rose cheered while wrapping her little arms around Gweni's neck. "Gidy up!" Emma Rose shouted out in her cute quite voice. I smiled and sat Emma Rose back down pinching her cheeks.

Gweni heard the door open, and Mistress Wood, Marry Ann and Carrie Sue walked into the kitchen, "Hello Gwendolyn! Shouldn't you be performing?" Marry Ann and Carrie Sue asked curiously. Gweni looked at the clock, it was about 1:10 and performing started at 12:30. "Oh yes, I suppose I am late. But  I was watching Emma Rose. Your brother and father are in the working quarters. I suggest you let them work in peace, their grandfater clock looks grand!" And with that Gweni was out the door and hopping down the street.

It was cold outside, and the sky was black from smoke. It was a Saturday, so the coalers had to work twice as hard, if they didn't want to work after time alone, Saturday work letting out early for the factories.

Gweni turned into a larger-than-normal alley, and walked until she reached the end, then she turned the corner and set up.  Pulling out a cherry wood violin, Gweni got to work. Playing her best piece, Gweni was able to get an audience.

After the song was finished, Gweni’s cap was full of change. About $3.23, way better than most. Everyone had left, except one man, who was staring at Gweni in shock, his mouth dangling open.

“Can I help you?” asked Gweni, narrowing her topaz eyes on the coal miner. “You look like the daughter of Mister R. Peterson, the richest man in America. I can’t remember her name, but she went missing as a child…” Gweni opened her mouth to ask a question, but the coal miner was gone. So Gweni went on with her job, thinking of Mister R. Peterson.
