The rain violently hit the window, making it even harder for George to fall asleep. He saw the lightning touch down far into the distance, making him shudder. Just as he had calmed himself down, the thunder boomed. He jumped from the bed, sweat glistening on his head.He took a few deep breaths, and looked over to make sure he didn't wake up his partner. He was sleeping soundly, the moon highlighting all his features. His messy, dirty blonde hair, his freckles, his bright green eyes that were hiding under his lids. He was beautiful, even while sleeping.
George decided that sleep was impossible, so he headed to the kitchen for a midnight snack. He opened the pantry, and sifted through the little amount of food they had. They hadn't gone to the grocery recently, so they really only had cereal. George decided that was good enough, and went to the fridge for some milk.
As he was opening the fridge, he heard the soft sound of footsteps. Clay groggily walked into the kitchen, looking very tired. "Oh no, Clay did I wake you?" George said nervously. "Well," Clay said rubbing his eyes, "I can't sleep without you there."
George felt awful. He had woken Clay up with his childish fear of thunderstorms, which he was supposed to have gotten over by now. When he was little, he would hide under his bed every time it stormed, and would cry until it ended. His parents told him he would get over it, but every time it stormed it got worse.
"George?" The soft voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Yes?"
"Why are you awake at this hour? It's 2 am."
George hesitated. He told one of his friends about his little fear when he was little, and they made fun of him. They ended up telling the whole school, and George got bullied for it for years. He knew Clay tried to be serious, but he loved to make fun of him. He made fun of him for too many things already, and he wasn't about to add another to the list.
"Oh.... I just wasn't tired."
Clay squinted at George as if analyzing him.
"No, that's not it. George, just tell me what's wrong."
Just as George was thinking of another excuse, thunder echoed throughout the house, making George yelp. He immediately put his hands over his mouth and closed his eyes so he couldn't see Clay's judgmental face.
"George.... are you afraid of thunderstorms?"
"I..." He figured by now it would be pointless to make up an excuse, and he would have to deal with the jokes Clay would make.
"Yes, I know it's really stupid okay. I don't like talking about it."
He waited for a response, but didn't get one. He opened his eyes, expecting to see Clay trying not to laugh, but he only saw sincerity and concern.
"It's okay, and it's not stupid. We can watch Netflix until you fall asleep. Is that alright with you?"
This took George completely by surprise.
"So, you aren't going to laugh at me?"
"Of course not, why would I make fun of you?"
George sighed. "Well you laugh at me about everything, and anytime I have told someone they made fun of me."
"George, I promise I won't make fun of you."
Clay's green eyes glistened with kindness and love, making George blush.
"Now, do you wanna go watch Netflix or not?"
"Of course, let's go do that."
He walked over to the couch and grabbed the remote. He put on a show they had been watching together and sat down. Clay sat down next to him and put his arm around George. They sat like that until lightning crashed outside, and George immediately jumped into Clay's arms. Clay chuckled, but held George close to his chest. The warmth made George feel safe, like nobody could ever hurt him. They fell asleep on the couch, curled up in each others arms.
After that day, George wasn't afraid of thunderstorms anymore.
