Journal Entry #24.
I have been on Earth for no less than 20 centuries. As an outsider to this planet, it's been strange how the humans interact with each other. Never, on any other planet we have kept tabs on, have I seen a more contradictory species. The planet has its share of different species living on the planet but the apex of the food chain has been the humans for such a long time and yet their bodies are far inferior than those in the wild. As I continued watching and reading, I saw that humans have been civilized for such a long time and have been the top predator since then.
What I don't understand is how their civilization works. In each country, there are different cultures which is normal for almost all the planets we've been on. A rarer sight though was the fact that they discriminate against each other based on their culture. What a weird way to proclaim the freedom they have in each country. There are also those who are in favor of having different cultures which is weird since these humans stand on equal ground and nothing has been done to solve either problem.
Their civilization also relies on certain people being voted on to speak for the masses. Politicians they call them. What's weird is that these politicians do not speak the mind of the people who have voted for them. They speak their own and care not for those in the lower extremities of the country. Fascinating and quite terrifying in this case. These people are held hostage without their knowledge.
The last and maybe the most important thing to note in this species as said before was that their very nature contradicts itself. They coin it Humanity. In some of the books I have read, humanity was what gave the humans their "conscience". To not be confused, conscience is their term for their subconscious. This Humanity, from what I've observed, paved the way for the humans to be the apex species on this planet. The intelligence they gained from humanity gave them the power to outsmart every other species on the planet even if their physical capabilities were far inferior. They have these weapons that can kill any and all living things on the planet while having technology advanced enough to change the topography of the planet itself. They have also discovered how to travel to the cosmos in search of a new planet or maybe, like us, they're trying to find other life in this universe but I don't think they have discovered us yet.
The contradiction comes after all this. The same Humanity that gave them these powers to overcome everything in their way is what's stopping them from achieving more and slowing down their ways. They stopped using other life forms, slowing their research speed. They stop advancing their technology, fearing that they might kill other living things in the process. It seems that when they were more brutal and barbaric, they progressed faster and better. Yet now, they fail to see that they're confined by the same thing that pushes them to progress. What a stupid contradiction it has been.
Don't get me wrong. Some people have challenged this mentality of conserving and only protecting what they have now. They have been prosecuted and beaten but the aftermath of what they have discovered continues on. I once helped a man named Galileo Galilei to make a simple telescope. How easily astonished these people are. And yet this groundbreaking discovery was the very reason people have abandoned him. His research is being used but the person was not in the right century it may have seemed. In conclusion, their humanity is interesting. Their intelligence, superiority, and survival instincts come from it but so does their morals, ethics and values. It gives them a balance of contradictory characteristics. Humanity offers them propulsion to the stars while grounding them to their roots. They even worship Gods (which has long been proven non-existent on other planets) while having the knowledge to conquer those way more advanced than them. So tribal yet so advanced. All in all, they remind me of a monkey holding a gun. So tribal yet so dangerously interesting.
I'm curious as to what this humanity can offer. They have made civilizations much faster than the other planets I have been to and yet their progress slows down until a man breaks the norm and strives to reach for the stars. Their very existence contradicts common sense. A species which can easily be equal to ours and the thing that stops them is the very thing that propels them forward. I will continue to watch over this Earth. They may not be as advanced like the other planets but their potential for greatness is much higher. Maybe even higher than that of ours.
This is Watcher #24 and Earth will be closely monitored from now on. I hope to see great things!
