“You can visit him, I guess. Don’t disturb him if he’s asleep,” a nurse warned us, while leading us to Daren. We tiptoed into the room, and peeked in at the bed. He wasn’t even lying down. He wasn’t even lying down!

“Hello Kate, hello Ava. How are you?” He grinned. He was sitting up on the bed drinking a glass of orange juice. “Hospital juice is good.”

I ran over and gave Daren a gentle hug. He was surprised, but hugged back.

“He’s fine right now, but he’s fragile, really. Might want to watch out for him for the next few days,” the nurse told us. Mom nodded.

“Usually I’m the one looking after those two,” Uncle Daren chuckled, pointing at us.

“What exactly happened with him? What must we watch out for?” I quizzed the nurse. She looked surprised that the questions came from me and not Mom, but I knew it was right for me to be the one to ask. I’m sure Mom was still a bit stressed over the whole thing.

“Well, we think it was a heart attack, but we’re actually not sure. He’s up and running, and it really hasn’t been long since the incident. Ensure his diet is good, his sleep, watch for fevers, things of that sort. Just look for anything indicating imperfect health. Any information you collect at all can be useful in the diagnosis,” the nurse told me. Daren was twiddling his thumbs. “Also watch for difference in behaviour and/or mental health,” she added.

“Does this end our visit?” Mom asked.

“Umm, yeah. We’ve got to keep this guy overnight though, just to make sure another emergency doesn’t happen anytime soon. Wouldn’t want you to go through all that hassle a second time.”

Mother looked displeased about that, but she gave U.D a friendly nod and we walked out the narrow doorway.
