Chapter Six

Los Angeles, CA

The Biltmore Presidential Suite

February 28th, 1984

Three Hours Until The Grammy's

"Bianca, please stop fidgeting," Karen says, sighing for the millionth time.

"I'm sorry, this dress is itchy," I say, trying to stay still with the phone up to my ear while listening to Private Dancer on the radio.

"You wanted to wear the tutu, darling. Please do suck it up; I so dislike whiners," Freddie's voice crackles through the phone.

Oh, the person on the phone is Freddie. We have weekly talks, and I'm not letting anything stop this one. Sometimes I put the receiver on the piano and play him something new I've learned. Sometimes I sing my scales, and he helps me get my voice ready to sing. Even if it is just for fun, Freddie says, "There's no need to ruin a set of pipes like mine so early in life."

"It's just... I never really sit in my tutus; I dance in them," I tell him, still fidgeting.

"Well, that is the point, sweet pea. Now you let her do your hair, and I'll talk to you next week."

"Ookaay," I pout into the phone.

"Now don't go sounding like that, Bianca darling. I'll be coming to the States real soon to see you."

"Really!?" I exclaim, my spirits lifting.

"Yes, really. Now let's hang up together, yes? On the count of three. One, two, three."

He always does this. Even if I stay on the line, he hangs up so we don't actually say goodbye. He's so silly sometimes. I heard Daddy say that Freddie doesn't have any kids or what he called a "partner," and sometimes he gets lonely. I don't know what kind of partner he was talking about, but I'll be his best friend so he doesn't feel lonely.

"Karen, it's soooo pretty! Thank you!" I say, giving her a big hug.

She hugs me back and says, "You're welcome, munchkin. Now hurry, I'm sure everyone is waiting for you."
