"You're going where?"
I stared at Lucas in disappointment.
"Babe, I'm sorry... coach only just decided to move training to today instead of Monday." He shuffled his feet slightly on the grass and ran his fingers through his messy, blonde hair.
I sighed and crossed my arms over my chest, avoiding eye contact. Of course, it had to be today, the one day Lucas managed to settle on a date night after I nagged him for the past month. I know it seems stupid but I just felt like bursting into tears. Instead, I bit my lip and ignored the fact that my face felt like it was growing hotter by the second.
Lucas opened up his arms and pulled me to his chest and I automatically buried my face into his shoulder.
"I'm sure we can figure something out soon okay? I'll let you know when I'm finished and we'll talk about it later tonight." He spoke softly into my ear.
I forced myself to nod in agreement when in reality I was pissed off. Lucas had always been fully immersed in his whole 'football career' but I was honestly getting sick of the number of times he had made promises and swiftly forgot about them as soon as I mentioned it again. But for me to disagree with Lucas...
Well, that's a whole other story I don't want to get into.
"Okay..." I managed to mumble before pulling myself away from him. Lucas gave a small smile.
He pecked me on the lips before jogging back over to his friends on the field, every one of their expressions were painted like they had just waited an eternity. Lucas glanced at me before focusing back on his teammates. He might've looked a couple more times but I wouldn't have noticed as I immediately turned in the other direction and headed straight for the bus stop.
And that's when I finally started to cry...actually, more like sob until my eyes puffed up and it was too painful to shed another tear.
Okay so maybe I could be acting overdramatic right now but it truly felt like I had just been dropkicked into an ocean of sadness. Lucas had let me down once again and I of course stood there and said nothing. No witty comeback, no anger, nothing, just an 'okay!'. I prodded my eyes with some tissues I had fished from my school bag before dropping onto a bench. I could already feel at least five other kids peering over at my puffy face. Probably not the best choice of area to have a breakdown in. However, my whole drowning in self-pity moment didn't last very long as I heard determined footsteps coming from my left and a high-pitched voice called out.
"Chris! There you are, you won't believe what just happened!"
I already recognised the voice and looked up at Stacy. Her straight, golden blonde ponytail swung from side to side as she pranced over to me with a bright pink gym bag swung over her shoulder. She quickly plopped herself right next to me, her mouth grinning with excitement. I had a feeling I needed to prepare my ears for what was going to ensue.
"Let me guess..." I placed my index finger on my chin, "the hottest guy in school looked at you?" I gasped sarcastically.
"Even better, the hottest guy in school invited me to his party!!" Stacy squealed and did jazz hands. I winced at the noise she made at the end of the sentence. I swear a dog could hear that girl's squeal from a mile away. I sunk back in the seat as she rambled on about how she was totally distracted by Mr. Hot Dude's collarbone while he was talking to her.
"And then he totally smirked when I said yes! Ryan is such a hottie, one day I'll get in his pan-" Stacy suddenly cut off mid-sentence and leaned closer towards me, "why are your eyes all puffy?"
"Wouldn't you like to know..." I muttered, tucking my chin into the neckline of my hoodie.
"It's Lucas isn't it?" She frowned.
