Keith walked around in the woods in the pitch black. The path was lit only by the moon and his phone's flashlight. It was something he did often, since he lived a little ways away from the road, in the middle of nowhere by a forest. Walking at night in a forest was pretty relaxing, actually. No loud noises. Just cicadas chirping, leaves rustling, and darkness. Everything was just normal.
He had gotten used to these sounds. So, when he heard some rustling off in the distance, Keith passed it off as just some animal and didn't think much of it. Well, not until...
Crrrack. The distinct sound of a tree branch snapping, followed by a scream and thud. Keith ran towards the source to find a boy, crumpled on top of a broken branch, groaning in pain and clutching his arm.
The boy didn't look too much younger than Keith, probably about 17. A couple leaves stuck to his brown hair and hoodie. It wasn't long before he noticed Keith's light. Once he did, he pulled back, his arm held defensively in his knees.
"Don't hurt me!" He whimpered, tucking his head behind his good arm.
"I'm not gonna hurt you," Keith said. He stepped closer to the boy, who just flinched away more. He looked at him with two wide blue eyes. He was afraid. Shining his flashlight up towards the trunk, Keith saw where the branch had been before it broke. "What were you doing 20 feet high in a tree?"
"Why do you wanna know?"
Keith was surprised at how defensive he sounded. Like he was trying to hide something. "I just wanna help you."
The boy looked at him for a moment. Then, he tried to get up, but lost his balance and fell over. Keith extended his hand and pulled him up, letting him lean on him to limp back. The boy also stuck his hand in his hoodie pocket.
As they walked to his place, a little voice in the back of his head piped up. Why am I helping this kid? He shook it away. He's injured. I couldn't just leave him there. I'm not that cold.
After a minute or two of walking, the boy asked, "Where are we going?"
"My place," Keith replied.
He nodded silently. Once they arrived back at the house, Keith sat him down on the couch and looked at his arm. It was bent awkwardly in the forearm; probably broke it in the fall. He wasn't exactly sure what to do, so he just called an ambulance.
Aside from that, the boy had some other injuries: a few scratches, scrapes, and a bruise or two. He might as well take care of those. It was the least he could do. So, he went and grabbed some Bandaids and a washcloth.
He winced as Keith cleaned up a scratch on his cheek. "Name's Lance, by the way," he said when he'd finished.
"Keith."
"Thanks for helping me." Lance sipped on the water Keith had given him.
"No problem."
"What were you doing in the woods, anyway?"
"I could ask you the same question."
Lance tensed up at the mention of him being in the woods. He looked a bit irritated, actually. Like he didn't want to talk about it. "None of your business!"
"Never mind then."
Another few minutes passed before the ambulance came and picked him up. After he'd left, Keith went back and put some stuff away. Then he noticed something on the couch. A small slip of paper, like a notecard, with something written on it. A phone number. It'd probably fallen out of Lance's pocket.
