Dhoni had a reputation as an aggressive batsman from a very early age. He is a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper. He gradually changed his playing style from lower order attacking batsmen to deal with high-pressure scenarios and his growing responsibility as a captain. He is a powerful hitter of the ball and is one of the fastest men in running between the wickets. His wicket-keeping skill is widely praised by cricket experts. He is quickest when it comes to stumpings. He has a world record for the highest number of stumpings by any wicket-keeper. His amazing statistics behind the stumps include 321 catches and 155 stumping in all three formats. He is the main wicket-keeper in the team but he occasionally bowls as a medium-fast bowler.

He mostly plays shots in the back foot. He has his own famous cricket shot, called the "Helicopter Shot", that can pick balls and send them in the galleries for six runs. ~~[Growing up we were told that if the batsman managed to keep his wicket intact when faced with a Yorker, then it was a big achievement. At best you could eke out a couple of runs and that would be great. But..., Dhoni had other ideas. He kept trying his best to hit that unplayable delivery out of the park. Initially it looked like an extremely ugly and awkward shot. When it was pulled off, it looked like a fluke. Then he did it again.. And again..!!! Today we simply call this the Helicopter Shot and have taken it for granted ! ]~~
He was a gem to the Indian team as his sterling performances with the bat have rescued India from many a tight situation.
