You are awoken by your 5:30AM alarm on a friday. You groan at the thought of going to your 6AM training, luckily it's a lighter training today, shooting range for 1 hour and a light 5KM run. Groggily and grumpily, you climb out of your bed, brush your teeth and change into your SAS training clothes. Alex, a good friend of yours who is also in the SAS, is waiting for you at the cafeteria.
"what took you so long?" he says, teasingly
"Hey hey, i've been doing this for too long, plus, couldn't get much sleep last night.
"flashbacks?"
"yep"
Worried, Alex says "it's been happening to you more recently, you should really consider seeing someone, it's not good for you." "And i don't want to have to wait for you here every morning heh."He says, teasingly.
"shut up. i've got a literal void in my belly, let's grab breakfast."
Alex was recruited on the same day as you into the SAS. Over time you became great friends and completed several operations together. You trusted eachother with your lives and never left eachothers sides. Honestly, he was really your only close friend there, other than another man you knew called Seamus who you were close to for some time before he left to move onto "bigger things" you asked him where he was going but he refused to tell you.
You both have breakfast from the cafeteria, which is nothing special, and chat for the next 15 minutes about training and operations before heading to the shooting range.
When you arrive at the shooting range with your duffle bag, with your C8 carbine and Desert Eagle, you spend about an hour there, shooting targets from medium range and doing speed trials. There are a few other soldiers there but its mostly empty. Once finished, you head out on your light 5k run with Alex.
Sweating, as it was a very hot day, you arrive home to shower. When you open your front door, you are greeted with a letter in brown envelope which had "CLASSIFIED" in big bold text on the front. It is addressed to Mr. y/n l/n. Confused, but curious you open the letter to see what it says inside;
'dear Mr.l/n you have received this letter as an offer to join an organisation. We have been watching you closely over the past few months as your work in the SAS has sparked our interest. We are a top secret anti terrorist organisation known as rainbow. Here in rainbow, we have all of the best of the best operators from around the world in an attempt to put an end to terrorism. Here we will cater for all your needs, from accommodation to food. If you are interested please return this letter signed below to the stated address and we will contact you shortly. You have 72 Hours to decide starting once this letter is opened. The information in this letter is completely confidential and you must tell nobody.
Your stomach sinks as you find yourself in complete disbelief at what you just read. The thought of moving on to something else and being amongst the best in the world excited you. On the other hand, you didn't want to leave your home in Herefordshire and the life you had found, which quite frankly, you were very happy to live for a long time. And most of all, you didn't want to leave Alex. In the next couple days you found yourself torn in decision, you did not know what to do. With four hours left to decide, you finally make a decision. you came to the conclusion that life is too short to live doing the same thing, and keep living the same old boring life you had. despite finding this life nice, you had always wanted something interesting to do, and this could be the big change you had wanted at times in your life. Immediately, you send the letter back to the address, which quite funnily, was near Herefordshire which meant you could still see people you knew.
A couple days later you receive another letter from the same address. They stated that in 48 hours they would pick you up from your home and take you to the rainbow base. Your body filled with excitement, but also nerves as you had to tell Alex the news.
"Hey, Alex"
"what's up, asshat?"
"i've got some news i need to tell you. Not exactly good news."
"alright, well i can clearly tell you're not dead, so don't bore me, get to the point hehe"
"okay well, I'm quitting the SAS to move on to other things, but ill still be living nearby Herefordshire."
A look of confusion went over Alex's face "what do you mean 'other things'?"
"Well i'm going to get a normal job and hopefully live a normal life, I've just decided that i don't want to be an operator anymore."
Alex had a look on his face that made you feel like he could see right through you, he didn't call you out though. "Well, that's shocking considering you always talked about how much you loved being an operator, and i sure will miss you if this is true, but i' not going to hold you back. Whatever you move on to I will support you all the way. Well, i don't wanna make this a love speech or anything but i'm definitely gonna miss you on the operations considering I've only done two without you."
you felt a rush of happiness go over you as his reaction was relatively good, also what he said showed how much you meant to him out on the field. "yeah, same with you man, i'm definitely gonna miss doing the operations with you, joking with you during break, and training with you. oh yeah, and definitely gonna miss destroying you in COD." you say jokingly
"shut up, you've only beaten me like twice!" he exclaims, annoyed.
"anyway, I've got my bags packed already and i'll be leaving tomorrow."
"so soon?!"
"yep, sorry man."
"alright then, all the best for the future, i'll shoot you a message soon, drinks on me next time we're out!"
"I'll hold you to it." you say, walking back to your room.
That night, you barely get any sleep, thinking about the days ahead. You think about how welcomed you'll be, if the other operators will like you, what the operations will be like. all of this rushes through your head like a locomotive at full speed as you lie on your bed staring at the ceiling.
