Chapter 4: The Truth Before Your Eyes

“Sophia what is that smell? Het ruikt naar verbrande ass" My brother said. I laughed because he said it smelt like burn ass. The “it” being us girls, Amira, Emma, and I curling our hair for the party tonight.

I swung open my room door and saw my brother just about to knock on it. I smiled at him as he lowered his hand from where the door would have been waiting for his knuckles.

“It is called, hair styling. We are flat ironing.” I said to him and he rolled his eyes.

“God gave you girls curly hair for a reason.” He said poking his head into my room. “Look at this place it is a fire hazard.”

“You should see Dominican hair salons when they are blow drying hair.” Amira informed. I began to laugh as I walked back to my vanity area.

“So…where are you going tonight?”  He asked as he walked in.

“I told you Thomas- it is a back to school party.” I said curling my hair.

“Sophia.” He said in a fatherly voice.

“Thomas niet starten" I said to him putting up my hand telling him not to start. I did not want to hear some lecture about letting go of James and not to go down the same road.

“Ladies…can you please tell your friend that she should be careful and not to just go after what she knows. There are plenty fish in the sea and plenty that you have not tasted.” He said to me. I rolled my eyes as I walked to my closet.

“And this right here is the attire.” I said pulling out a skin tight royal blue tube dress.

“Wicked.” Amria said.

“So you guys are going to ignore me. I am your elder…all of you.” Thomas said. I laughed and then tossed my dress to the bed.

“Thomas. I am not going to do anything stupid. I am just going to have a good time and party. Let loose. Like you said I can not stay on the same guy forever and to get with a new guy, I have to go out right?” I said holding my brothers shoulders and shook him back and forth a bit. He rolled his eyes because he was not buying my banter.

“Sophia…I am your brother I know you…You are going to this party to seduce the hell out of James.”

“And then some.” I poked my brother and smiled and then skipped to my bed.

“Amira tell her something.” He said to my friend. Amira looked at Thomas and raised her eyebrows. I laughed.

“Atta girl.” I said reaching toward her with my hand in the air for her to clap it, which she did. He shook his head at us high fiving ourselves.

“Emma.” He looked at her and she smiled at him. I found her smile a bit peculiar. It was like those award smiles you give a guy when you like them but you are trying to hold back.

“Tell Sophie something.” He ordered.

“Listen to Thomas.” Emma said like a robot as she starred at my brother. I looked at her up and down.
