Chapter Six

The police officer walked up to the window that Alex had rolled down and leaned down. “License and registration?” he asked.

“You don’t want my license, we aren’t here, and you weren’t here.” Alex said to the police officer.

“I’m sorry sir, I don’t know what I’m doing here.” The officer said as music touched his ears. Whatever the music was, it was seriously confusing him. I shook my head at our dumb luck, I looked over to see if Colbie felt the same. Her face was blank and her mouth was hanging open her eyes drooping. I might have laughed except she didn’t look she was kidding. My heart picked up pace, what was wrong with her. The police officer left the window and Alex started driving again.

“Colbie?” I asked terrified. Her face didn’t show anything that meant she’d heard me say her name. “Colbie?!” I repeated her name more forcefully. “What did you do to her?” I asked Terra.

“Stop being Mellow dramatic, she’ll be fine. Not that you care because you guys hate each other.” Wow. How about we act our age? I watched as Colbie’s eyes slid the rest of the way closed. I watched her sway back and forth as she started mumbling.

“Sam?” I heard her voice very quietly when she whimpered my name. For a second I thought she was coherent but she still wouldn’t respond to anything I did or said. I looked desperately at Terra, couldn’t she do something? She sighed dramatically and rolled her eyes “Look she’ll be better in a minute or two.” I watched as Colbie slowly started to fold into herself falling toward the floor.

“Colbie?” I asked her again trying to see if she could hear me. I still didn’t understand what was wrong with her in the first place. “What’s wrong with her?” I asked Terra. I probably sounded like a broken record.

“She’ll be okay!” Terra said clearly annoyed now. She pointed an angry finger and I followed the direction it was point till my eyes fell on Colbie’s face; where she was pulling open her eyes.  I breathed a sigh of relief. She just stared at me for a few moments and it seemed like she was still unresponsive but she seemed to be waking up slowly. Out of nowhere she burst into an upright position and put her hand over her mouth.

“I’m gunna be sick.” She said trying to get a response from someone. I looked toward an even further aggravated Terra for help.

“Alex!” she said loudly. He shook his head and slowly rolled to a stop on the shoulder. Terra threw open the door and I watched Colbie race out. “Well are you going to follow her?” I looked at Terra’s annoyed face and realized maybe that was a good idea. I watched as she fell to her knees and clutched her stomach, I tried not to listen to the sound of her spitting up her lunch. I’ve always had a pretty weak stomach and just the thought of getting sick usually makes me get sick. But with her I didn’t have to worry, things were different; I’d stomach whatever to help her. I wrapped my arm around her waist keeping her steady and used my free hand to hold back her hair. I don’t know how long it was- it seemed like forever- but finally she stopped up-chucking. She slowly straightened up and I let go of her hair putting my other arm around her waist so she could have extra support. We’d taken but two steps before she whimpered and reached for something to grab hold of as she fell toward the earth, only she wasn’t actually falling. I had a hold of her; I just assumed she didn’t realize I was there because she jolted like she thought she hit the ground.

I bent down and knocked her knees out from underneath her so I could cradle her in my arms. That just seems like the easiest way to carry someone and still be polite. After crossing the short distance between us and the van, I swung myself and her in and plopped down across from a bored Terra. Gawd didn’t she even care? I laid Colbie in my lap and cradled her head to my chest. That seemed to spike some interest in Terra… She had way too much intuition for one person… See was examining me curiously as if she saw something. I gave her a confused look trying to say ‘What? Leave me alone.’ but she her face only turned into a grin.
