YOU REACH OVER TO DIG THE BALL, and it soars over to Kageyama.Determined, Hinata races over to the net and jumps high into the air, but Kageyama instead sets it to Tanaka. He spikes the ball hard, and no one from the opposite side makes it in time to receive it. With a loud thud from the ball touching the ground, the scorekeeper gives your team another point.
The referee blows on his whistle, marking the end of the second set. Tanaka proudly hollers about his last hit, while Hinata silently sulks about not getting the ball. Kageyama tries his best to reassure his orange-haired teammate, though it comes off as a bit forced and unnatural.
It's a tied game now, and the final set is starting soon. You take a sip from your bottle, but you almost choke on water when you hear high-pitched shrieks coming from the top ledge of onlookers.
"Hey, you're back, Oikawa!" Aoba Johsai's coach announces, greeting a far too familiar face. Your fingernails dig into your palms.
This can't be happening.
"Who the hell is that?" Tanaka questions, clearly aggregated and bothered by the attention Oikawa is getting from the female students. Daichi states that Oikawa is Seijoh's captain, which takes everyone aback, especially you. Hesitating, Kageyama adds, "He was my upperclassman back at Kitagawa. I learned how to serve and block by watching him. Oikawa's a top offensive setter."
You swallow, though your throat still feels dry. No wonder you recognized Oikawa when you first met him—he's one of the best volleyball players in your area. When you think about it, you've definitely seen him in the news and tournaments.
"Oikawa, please don't hurt yourself!" one of his fangirls shout. He waves at her and flashes a flamboyant smile. There's an unsettling feeling in the pit of your stomach. Oikawa turns to face your side of the court, but you avert your gaze. You wish you could run away from this situation.
"Long time no see, Tobio! Are you having fun being the king?" he calls out. Kageyama grimaces, but he chooses to not say anything. You glare at Oikawa. You may be nervous about making eye-contact with him, but you're more upset by how condescending he's being with Kageyama. Oikawa's eyes scan to you and widen for a brief moment, though he's quick to recompose himself.
"Wow, what a plot twist!" Oikawa exclaims, clapping his hands together, "I can't believe that my old acquaintance is playing with such a cute girl. I'm a bit jealous."
He ducks underneath the net and strolls over to you. Tanaka is ready to pounce on Oikawa, but you place your hand on your teammate's chest to stop and push him away. Teeth gritted, you quietly tell Oikawa, "This isn't funny, Tooru. Why didn't you tell me that you play volleyball?"
He ruffles your hair.
"You're the one who didn't tell me that you're on the boys' team," Oikawa whispers, his cool breath blowing against your face, "This is going to be fun, though. If the coach puts me in, I'm not going to hold myself back, Y/N."
