When Spencer and Michaela arrived at the station, Hotch decided to lay the case to rest for the night. He sent everyone to a hotel nearby and let the team know to be back early the next morning with a clear mind.

Emily and JJ were rooming together and had agreed to let Michaela stay with them until the killer was caught. If she was honest, Michaela would have much preferred to sleep in her own bed. But she knew that Emily would be worried and unable to sleep unless she knew for certain that Michaela was safe. Sleeping in the same bed as Emily for a few days was a small price to pay for her sister's peace of mind.

It didn't help Michaela's restlessness, though. She tried to avoid tossing and turning so as not to wake up Emily, but Michaela's mind was racing. There was so much going on that she couldn't quiet her thoughts for long enough to drift into unconsciousness. After almost an hour of trying, she finally gave up and got out of bed. She pulled on her hoodie and grabbed the room key sitting on the bedside table before quietly exiting the room.

Michaela made her way to the hotel pool. She knew it was closed at this hour, but she had no intention of swimming. Instead, she sat in one of the plastic chairs and pulled her knees up to her chest. The sound of the filter and the movement of the water was soothing. The sticky Florida air smelled intensely of chlorine and made Michaela feel a bit more at ease. The darkness of night enveloped her, but the dim lights inside of the pool were bright enough that she could see Spencer walking through the gate and into the pool area.

"Couldn't sleep?"

Michaela just shrugged as Spencer took a seat next to her.

"We'll catch him," he told her, confidently.

She was silent for a few moments, not sure if she really believed him. "How do you guys do it? I mean, you see things like this every single day. You see so much evil and just...you go about living your lives like nothing happened. I don't get it."

"Well, that's kind of the whole point," Spencer said. "I can't speak for everyone but I do it to try and keep people safe. To give them peace of mind, to put the evil ones away. It's not all bad, you know."

"Yeah, I know."

"Emily said you were thinking about joining the BAU as a technical analyst. Is that still something you'd like to do?"

Michaela shrugged. "I don't know if that's something I ever wanted to do in the first place," she confessed. Her voice was quiet. "Especially now."

"What do you mean?"

"You're an only child, aren't you?"

Spencer nodded. "Yes."

"I don't know what I want to do. I feel like I have so much to live up to, such big shoes to fill. My parents are presidential ambassadors, my sister's an FBI agent. I feel like joining the BAU is what I should do, right?"
