Ken's eyes flickered open, taking in his surroundings. He was in a small white room, the only furniture being the bed he was on, and a side table with a glass of water. He groaned, as a sharp pain erupted from his side. A woman in a light blue shirt and pants rushed in. "Oh," she said with a surprised look, "You're awake! Is there anything I can get you?"
"No," Ken muttered, "I can get it myself." He leaned out of the bed to reach the cup next to him, but every move he made caused another wave of discomfort to radiate from his side.
"Now you just lie there," the woman instructed, fetching the water and handing it to Ken, "And I'll get you that. You've been out for three days, and you are in no shape to be doing much of anything. I'm Nurse Florence, and if you need anything, just call."
"What happened?" Ken asked.
"You were stabbed in the side. Quite a nasty one, too. We found you in the back room of Freddy's, bleeding all over the floor. It's a good thing your sister noticed you were missing, 'cause if we had been two minutes later than we were, you would've been dead."
"Freddy's? But I was outside..."
"Well, that ridiculous! We found you inside! Now, do you want this TV on? Or should I leave you be?"
"Turn it on, please."
The nurse pressed a button on the remote she was holding and a TV in the corner of the room on the roof came on. The channel was set to Family, and an episode of Wizards of Waverley Place was starting. Ken grumbled, but the Florence had already left. Ken wasn't a fan of the show, but his sister loved it. Because he was forced to watch with her, he knew every episode by heart. In this one, Alex accidentally cast a spell on the little running man on top of her dad's trophy that brings it to life. The trophy proceeds to run around the house, and the rest of the episode is Alex and her siblings trying to catch the trophy while hiding it from their parents. Ken found it odd that the small man wouldn't need some time to figure out how to do things like walking, talking and all the other things we learn as kids. It was almost like that trophy already knew these things, as if he had been alive at one point, but... 'That's ridiculous,' Ken thought to himself, 'There's no way they would put things like that in a show for kids!' Ken's musings were interrupted by someone barging in. It was his mother, Emily Johnson, all bleary-eyed over her son. "Oh, my sweet baby!" She cried, hugging her son tightly.
"Ow, mom, OW! LEGGO!" Ken screamed, pain blossoming for his wound. Emily stepped back, tears streaming down her face. Amanda came in the room next, doing a better job of keeping her composure. "Hey, so I hear you're my hero this time," Ken commented. Amanda nodded, afraid that if she opened her mouth, she would lose it. Emily, on the other hand, couldn't keep her mouth shut.
"Oh, my poor, poor thing, I can't believed this happened to you, to ME! I've always thought that mothers have the hardest time dealing with catastrophe. Sure, it hurts, but mothers feel the pain inside, and we wish we could help bu-"
"Mom," Ken asked, "Do me a favour and shut up."
Emily switched moods in a split second. "EXCUSE ME?" she bellowed, "DO NOT TAKE THAT TONE WITH ME YOUNG MAN. A LIFE-THREATENING INJURY IS NO EXCUSE TO HAVE NO MANNERS! APOLOGIZE RIGHT NOW!"
Nurse Florence came in. "Emily, maybe you should leave. Your son needs to rest. How about we go and get you some coffee?" she persuaded. Her and Emily left, leaving Amanda and Ken alone.
"Hey, what's the matter?" Ken asked, "This isn't your fault, you know."
"I-I, You-y-you," she stuttered, the way she always did when she felt guilty, "Th-this-this." She took a deep breath, and let it all out, "This whole thing would have never happened if I hadn't demanded to go to Freddy and Friends!"
"Hey, hey, hey," Ken reassured, "It's my fault. I shouldn't have friend to take matters into my own hands. I'm the one who couldn't just walk past that alley."
She looked at Ken qizzically. "Alley? You were in the restaurant, in the back room."
It was Ken's turn to be confused. "But, I had left for a break from the smell of that place, and there was this man in purple, and the little girl wearing all green! I knocked the knife out of his hand, but he picked it up and..." Ken winced, remembering the pain.
Florence returned. "Alright kid. The doctor says you'll stay here for three more days, and then you can go home, but no school for a week. Capiche?"
"Capiche."
