He got into his car and started driving pretty fast along the highway. Soon it turned into a winding mountain road. It was rainy and dark that night.
"Billy! What have you got for me?" he asked.
"I've got a 35-year-old Air Force colonel. Crushed his lower spine in some kind of experimental armor. Mid-thoracic burst fracture," Billy replied, on speakerphone."Well, I could help, but so can 50 other people. Find me something worth my time," he answered. He had better things to do now.
"I have a 68-year-old female with an advanced brain stem glioma," was Billy's next case. Well, she was a goner. Those were extremely hard to cure, and besides, she'd probably die soon.
"Yeah, you want me to screw up my perfect record? Definitely not," he said out loud.
"How about a 22-year-old female with an electronic implant in her brain to control schizophrenia struck by lightning?"
Now that, was by far the most interesting thing he'd heard all day.
"That does sound interesting," he said. "Could you send me the..."
His phone dinged and a scan of a brain showed up.
"...got it," he told Billy. He looked back to the road, to make sure he was driving the right way, then back down at the brain scan.
Then he heard the crash of metal on metal and saw the headlights of a car shining directly into the window. He could make out the shape of a figure and something splattered on the windshield of the other car.
But only for a fraction of a second.
Then the world spun around and around and he felt an enormous pain in his hands and sharp glass stinging his face. The car was falling down, and down, until with a loud crash it landed on the banks of the Hudson River. A bridge's lights could be seen flashing.
The last thing he saw was blood on his hands before complete darkness.
