When Stephen woke up much later, he couldn't see out of his left eye. It was swelled shut. But from what he could see through the right eye, he was in a hospital room.

He felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Christine's. "It's gonna be okay," she said.

He turned to look down at his hands, which was a source of enormous pain. What he saw was his hands in bandages, in casts, and with metal things in them. Fixators. Only used when severe nerve damage occurred.

"Wh-what happened?" he asked, stuttering.

"They rushed you in a chopper. But it took a little while to find you. Golden hours for nerve damage went by while you were in the car," she said.

She paused before continuing.

"11 stainless steel pins in the bones. Multiple torn ligaments. Severe nerve damage in both hands. You were on the table for 11 hours," she finished. She knew he wasn't going to like that.

"You-you're joking," Stephen said.

"No," she replied. "And...one death."

Stephen turned to look at her. "What?"

She clicked her tongue. "The person in the other car--her name was May Parker--she's dead. Her car went head on into yours."

Stephen sat back, clearly shocked. He was used to saving lives, not taking them. May Parker's death had been his fault.

And that one fault of his would cause a cascade of events in the months to follow.
