I straighten the Slytherin tie that's tied around my neck, grab my black brief case and make my way off the Hogwarts Express. The late night chills my bones as I follow the crowd until I hop onto an empty thestral-pulled carriage. I stare out at the many towers and turrets of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, thinking about the upcoming year.

Soon the carriage pulls up to the entrance to the school and I jump out, walking into the oak front doors and setting my brief case down where everyone else has set their minor luggage, such as their extra snacks and pillows. I make my way into the Great Hall and take a seat at the very edge of the Slytherin table.

"Psst, Draco, why are you acting so odd? Come sit with us!" A dark haired girl named Pansy Parkinson hisses. "Er, no, I'm fine where I am." I say, ignoring the first part of what she said. Taken aback, Pansy looks over to where Professor Dumbledore now stood, announcing that Professor Snape, head of Slytherin House, will be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, while Professor Slughorn will be taking on his old post of Potions Master.

I don't applaud along with everyone, lost in my thoughts. I glance down at my golden plate and am slightly startled to find food surrounding it, covering the table. I don't have very much of an appetite, so I look around the Great Hall. I soon spot three very familiar faces. My eyes slide from one face to the next, lingering on each. Harry Potter notices me and jabs Ron Weasley with his elbow. Weasley looks at Potter, and I see Potter murmur something to Weasley and they both turn to look at me.

As I look away from them, my eyes focus on Hermione Granger. Ah...Hermione.... She's picking at her food, laughing at her friends' joke. A piece of her shoulder-length brown, wavy hair is pinned to one side with a silver burette, matching the silver Prefect badge pinned to her Gryffindor robes. She, too, notices me and looks over at me, a very small blush rising in her cheeks. As I casually look away, Potter and Weasley glance at me, then at Hermione. "Why is Malfoy looking at you, Hermione?" I hear Weasley ask Hermione. I don't hear her respond and I sneak a glance at her, seeing her cheeks bright red. "I do hope that you're blushing only because it's a guy looking at you." Weasley says loudly, his eyes sliding in my direction. I clench my fists under the table, but don't look at them.

The food vanishes and the Great Hall goes silent immediately. "I reckon you all are content and ready to sleep, so I won't hold you. May you dream well and wake refreshed." Dumbledore smiles and motions to the Entrance Hall. I stand and let the crowd sweep me into the Hall. I walk down several staircases and into the dungeons. I stop at the hidden entrance to the Slytherin common room, murmur the password, and step inside. I don't welcome the first years, but instead walk straight into my dormitory. I sit on my four-poster bed and pull the bed curtains, so that I'm not visible.

I rest my head on my pillow and lay on my bed, my eyes closed, picturing Hermione laughing happily with her friends. I soon drift into a dreamless sleep.
