It was a cool, dark night. You'd been on your own since your camp was overrun just two weeks ago. You sat by yourself on a log, thinking about those who were in your group. You smiled thinking about that night Derrick found a game of chess, and he made everyone try to beat him. No one could of course; he was a champion. You often thought about the little things like these. The things we took for granted before all hell broke loose. Tears filled your eyes as you smiled, thinking about his crazy victory dance he did after every game. You owed everything to Derrick. He was the one who got you out of the city when everything went down, and in only a second, he was taken from you. You were now crying, no longer able to hold back the tears. You wiped them away with your sleeve as they ran down your cheeks.
You looked up at the night sky and saw the beautiful stars. You felt an overwhelming sense of peace looking at the stars. It seemed to be the only thing that couldn't be destroyed; something that you couldn't lose. They'd always be there.
There was a popping noise, like that of a twig snapping in half. You jump up and turn around immediately. You pull your gun out. "Only two bullets left," you think to yourself, "let's make them count." The darkness was overwhelming, almost making it impossible to see something even twenty feet away from you. You pause and listen for growling from the biters. Nothing. "Who's there?" you say nervously. No response. You turn around quickly making sure no one had approached you from behind. A quick look left and right, then spun back around. You were struck with fear as the dark figure of a person became visible.
