It was Tuesday morning and I woke up to the smell of something burning. My 5 year old sister, Macy, was on top of me. "What is that smell?" I asked sitting up. "We tried to make bacon but we forgot about it and now it's burnt!" she cried. In the kitchen my brother Jesse was fanning the smoke with a magazine. "Oh my gosh, you need to be more careful!" I cried as I put the pan in the sink and ran it under cold water. "I'm sorry Sid, I just got distracted." Jesse sat down on the kitchen stool and ran his hands through his hair. Jess and Macy are my half siblings and both have curly brown hair and green eyes, like their father, who came only on holidays and birthdays. I on the other hand have black hair and dark olive skin, from my father, who was from Mexico. I had been living with my mother for three years. She abandoned me when I was young and no one knew where my father was, so I had been in foster care for most of my childhood, until they found my mom. "It's okay." I sighed, giving Jesse a kiss on the forehead. "Where's Tiffany?" "In her room". I got up from the chair and found my mother sprawled on her bed with an empty wine bottle on her nightstand. I looked at her with anger boiling in my chest. Her 9 year old son should not have to make breakfast on his own. Suddenly I was filled with guilt, I should have been up to make them breakfast. I knew that my mother wouldn't do it. I grabbed the bottle and took it to the kitchen. "Guys you need to get ready for school" I said to Jess and Macy, handing them each a granola bar. We had just moved to Boston, after my mother had lost her job and it was my first day of school at Quinn Adams Highschool. My siblings hurried off to their rooms and I went to look in the bathroom mirror. I had dark circles under my eyes, and my hair was a mess. I quickly brushed it and headed back into the kitchen to make lunch for my siblings.
Once I got to school I headed for the office to get my schedule, where a teacher and another girl greeted me. The teacher had blond hair cut in a short bob and the girl had freckles that swept across her cheeks and long wavy red hair. "Hello, you must be Sidney Cruz. I am Mrs. Ford and this is Haven. You two have first period together so she can walk you." "Nice to meet you" I smiled at Haven and she met my eyes and quickly looked away. We started down the hall and Haven walked beside me with her head down. I looked at her and said "So any advice for the new girl?" Haven turned to look at me "Um... I.. I don't know." she stuttered. I chuckled "So do you like history?" Her eyes lit up "I love it. I just find learning about our history so fascinating and-" She looked at me, with my eyebrows up and her cheeks flushed pink. "I'm sorry that was weird." "No not at all, I like history too." I smiled at her. When we reached the classroom Haven quickly said bye and went to sit at the back of the room while I sat at the front. A few moments later a girl with beautiful blond hair and blue eyes came into the class and sat beside me. "Hi! You must be new. My name is Caitlin!" She smiled brightly at me. "Sidney" I replied. When the teacher walked in she groaned "Ugh I hate history."
