Hoseok had grown and was now the age of six. His sweetness had only grown as he did. He was still playful and innocent, just like any child of this age should be.
But something different was happening today. The first day of school.
"You look so handsome," his mum complimented him as she finished dressing him. Hoseok turned to the mirror in his bedroom. I was sat on the dresser beside the mirror, watching the whole scene unfold. She was right - he did look cute in his uniform.
"You think so?" I could hear the nerves filling his tiny, high-pitched voice. His mum obviously heard them too as she brought him into a hug.
"Of course, Hobi." His mum's voice was uplifting to try and free Hoseok of his worries. But I could see that that did not happen. She released him from their embrace and looked at him in the eyes. "Be brave, Hoseok." We both knew that she was being serious when his parents use his full name.
"How?"
"Make a friend," she continued. "You don't have to have loads of friends. Just one really good friend is all you need."
"Only one?" Hoseok questioned his mother's words.
"Hmm," she hummed her response. Even I was thinking about the reasons behind her advise. "Come on. Let's get going." She gave him a sweet smile as she stood and held a hand out from him to take. Without hesitating, Hoseok slipped his hand into his mother's. I jumped down from the dresser, eager to know the fate of today.
I followed them out of the room. But before I could leave the room, the door was shut in my face. Good job I can walk through them, isn't it?
Once through the door, I saw Hoseok putting on his shoes whilst his mother was doing to same action. I didn't need to bother. Despite being bare footed, if I was injured, I would heal within seconds. However, I can be left with scars if it is deep enough as I found out about a year ago. I was in the bathroom and somehow, I slipped and cut my right eyelid open. Hoseok came rushing in from the next room to see what all of the noise was about. He soon left after discovering nothing, of course. But I will always be reminded of that moment. The only moment where he took notice of me.
Now the two had their shoes on, the three of us left the house. I say 'three' because his father was working away from the week.
"Ready?" His mum asked after strapping him into his chair seat. Hoseok stayed quiet. Even though I knew he couldn't feel it, I placed my hand on his knee to try and comfort him. It seemed as though he felt something as he slightly flinched the moment I touched him. Must be a coincidence. "You'll be okay, Hobi. If you feel too scared, talk to your teacher, okay?" He just hummed. I could tell he was getting more and more nervous as time went on.
Not once did I remove my hand from his knee as his mum drove to the school. It was so strange to see Hoseok like this. Normally, he was a confident young boy who would greet every stranger he met. But then, he was so quiet and trying to hide away. When the car was parked, his mum turned to him before speaking.
"It might seem scary but you'll be okay. I'll see you later." She undid her seatbelt. "I'll stay with you until it's time to go in, yeah?" Hoseok just nodded and waited for his mum to unbuckle his seatbelt. Such a well-behaved child. He jumped from the car as I stepped out (ensuring to keep the car closed).
Hoseok forced his mum to hold his hand. I noticed her smile at his cute action. I wished I could hold his hand too. For real.
We were greeted with a large group of people of varying ages. I'm not surprised the kid was scared. Slowly, we approached them. Hoseok was taking small steps to prolong to the length of time before meeting everyone. His mum perked up a bit when she saw another mother stood with her son.
"Hi. I didn't realise Yoongi was starting today." Without letting go on Hoseok's hand, she bend down to Hoseok's height and looked at Yoongi. He too seemed just as anxious as Hoseok. Hiding behind his mum, Yoongi was clinging onto his mum's legs.
"Yeah. They grow up so fast," Yoongi's mum replied.
"You got that right." The two mother's laughed.
"Hey, Hoseok, you can call me Eun-Jung, okay?". Hoseok nodded. Hoseok and Yoongi then started to stare at each other. For some reason, the exchange in looks gave Hoseok a little bit of confidence that he was lacking. Gently, he let go his mum's hand and stepped over to Yoongi.
"H-hi. I'm Hoseok," his voice was even quieter than it was before leaving this morning. Hoseok tried to give Yoongi a smile but I understood that he was just trying to be brave, like his mum told him to be. Yoongi side-stepped from behind his mum.
"I-I'm Y-Yoongi," his voice showed that he was just as scared as Hoseok.
'W-want to be m-my friend?" Hoseok boldly asked. Yoongi blinked a few times to comprehend what Hoseok had just said to him. Hoseok smiled again. Finally, Yoongi flashed a little smile and nodded at Hoseok. Both boys were proudly smiling as they felt their confidence lift at their instant bond. Both myself and their mother's were smiling as we watched their first of many interactions. Surely, nothing bad can come of this meeting.
Boy, was I wrong.
