The bell rung and Tanaka was still in the bathroom, I took this chance to leave without him. Not that he wasn't a joy to be around but sometimes he and Nishinoya could be a handful.
I was expecting to be ambushed by Nishinoya or tackled by Tanaka before i had made it out the front door of the school. To my relief I didn't bump into either, but I did see a face i recognized.
"You're Kiyoko, the manager of the volleyball team, right?" I asked after approaching her while she was filling up a water bottle.
She looked at me a second before nodding, "And you're Coach Ukais daughter?"
I smiled, "Yeah, how did you know?"
She looked at me a bit confused, "You showed up at practice, remember?"
i mentally slapped myself, i was too nervous in front of her, "Right..." There was a small silence that I rushed to fill, "Weren't you guys looking for a manager?" At this point i didn't even know what i was saying.
Her eyes widened for a second, "We were, how did you know?"
"Just a guess or something..." i rubbed my arm awkwardly.
An arm was thrown around both me and Kiyoko, "Look at my girls talking with each other!" Tanaka grinned.
Kiyoko swiftly but gently threw his arm off of her, "You should get to practice before you're late."
He pulled out his phone and looked at the time, "Fuck!" he exclaimed and started to run off to the club room, "See you soon, ladies!" He turned around and blew a kiss to us. Kiyoko seemed to almost dodge it, as if it would kill her.
"If you're interested in joining you can come visit me at lunch or after school, I've got to change now though." She gave me a small smile and walked off.
Being a manager wouldn't be so bad i suppose. Dad didn't seem to want me in the gym when I went to give him his phone though. Would he be fine with me joining? He doesn't have a say in the matter, what I want to do after school is up to me. Plus at the end of practice I might be able to practice myself.
I walked into the shop and sat my bag behind the counter and my dad kissed my forehead, "Be back after practice." and just like that he was gone. I pulled my homework out and started working on it.
I would get to see him more too. It sucks when he's gone for almost the entire day. Sometimes he's too tired to eat dinner and he just goes to sleep.
"I'll do it." I confirmed to myself.
I heard and awkward shuffling and looked up to see two students ready to check out. My cheeks went ablaze and I apologized.
At lunch when me and Tanaka would usually go to Nishinoya's class I excused myself early and told him I was going to the bathroom. It wasn't a great excuse because he offered to walk me there but I knew if I told him I was going to see Kiyoko he would start foaming at the mouth.
I slowly opened the door to the third year classroom, to be met with multiple eyes boring into me. My ears were on fire as i walked to Kiyoko, who was one of the few people not looking at me.
"Hi. You told me to see you during lunch or after school about the manager position, right?" I asked, hoping that she didn't forget.
She looked up and nodded, "Thanks for considering it. I was worried the volleyball team would be left alone next year..."
My face paled a little, "I was thinking i might just do it this year... I was planning to try out for the girls volleyball next year..."
I could practically see the hope fall from Kiyoko's face, "Well, that will still be handy. And who knows, maybe you'll fall in love with the team and stay anyway. They can be quite charming."
I nodded, "So do I need to sign up anywhere in particular?"
Kiyoko nodded, "Yeah, you should see Mr.Takeda in the faculty room after school. I can show you where we'll be changing before practices now if you'd like."
"If it's no problem..." I looked around and noticed most of the students were talking within their groups now.
She stood and started walking out, leaving me standing there before I realized.
I waved to Kiyoko as we parted ways and walked back to our own classes. I hope i made the right decision. I could tell i really let her down by telling her I'm playing for the girls team next year. I shouldn't let it effect me too bad though, I'm sure she'll be able to find someone else to manage the team before then.
I sat down at the desk and drank the drink i had bought at the vending machine on accident.
Kiyoko said she was thirsty so i told her we could go to the vending machine on the way back since i had recently found out where it was. She agreed and when she told me what drink she wanted I pressed the wrong button and had to get another one. I told her she could have both but she declined and thanked me for the drink.
I didn't even like the drink but I didn't want to waste my money.
"Oh is that Dr. Pepper?! I love that stuff!" Watabe exclaimed.
I looked down and it and put it on her desk, "Here, I don't like it."
She gave me a confused look but drank it anyway.
"Why did you get a drink you didn't like?" Aoki laughed.
I pouted and laid my head on the desk, "I didn't mean to..."
"I'll buy you one since you have the Dr. Pepper to Watabe." Aoki said standing up.
I sat up and shook my head, "That's alright, I wasn't even thirsty anyway, I was buying a drink for someone and got the wrong one..."
She nodded and sat back down, "Who were you buying the drink for? Tanaka?"
I saw Watabe's head perk up a little and she waited for my answer.
"Huh? No I was buying it for the manager of the volleyball team." I explained.
"You saw Kiyoko without me?" I turned around to see Tanaka standing there looking heartbroken.
I rolled my eyes, "You wouldn't be interested in what we were talking about anyway."
"Not true, I would savor every word that came out of your guys' mouths." He said, fake swooning into his seat.
I gave his shoulder a hard punch, "Shut up, dude."
