Fiona's POV
I woke up, being aware of the movements around me. It was a little dark out, and I expected it to be around six or seven in the morning. The sun was peaking at the edge of the horizon, providing minimal light to the environment. I heard the fire crackling, and looked outside our tent, there she was, congregated around the campfire, poking it and roasting food. Once I got enough energy to get up, I went and joined her, sneaking up behind her.
“Boo!” I whispered. Kali jumped, then nudged me in the shoulder.
“Don't do that! I almost screamed –”
I laughed, looking at what she was roasting. It was breadfruit that she had salted and pierced through with a wooden stick.
“You never usually do things like that. You must be in a good mood,” she said, in her cute accent.
“I am. I'm just happy to be around you, especially wake up with you early in the morning.”
“Really,” she muttered. It seemed as if she had something on her mind.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“Um,” she paused. “No. To be honest, I'm not.”
I scooted closer to her, wrapping my arm around her waist.
“What's wrong?”
“Today's the day that you're leaving. Am I right?” She was right. I knew that today was the day that I leave Jamaica, returning to Toronto, and resuming my life at Degrassi. I didn't want to face it, but now that she had mentioned it, I couldn't avoid it. It had to be discussed.
“Yeah, but don't worry. I can come and visit and – ”
“Fiona, no.” she interrupted. “That's the thing. You come and visit me, and things won't be the same. We won't know what would happened when you return. People could change, things could happen, and I don't think I could deal with that.” she confessed.
“So you don't think it would work?”
She paused a moment, before answering my question. “I don't know. That's what I'm scared of.” A tear fell down her cheek, sizzling as it hit the campfire. “I don't love you, Fiona. I'm in love with you. You don't understand.”
“I do, 'cause I feel the same way.” I said, putting my hand on her thigh. She got up, wiping the tears from her eyes. She then returned the tent, packing stuff in our bags.

Once we left Blue Mountain, we had arrived to my hotel in record time. I had also experienced the most quiet car ride to ever exist. I understand where Kali was coming from, though. She did not want to be too attached to me, otherwise saying goodbye would be too difficult. But this silent treatment was killing me, too, and I didn't know what to say to make it better. Whatever I would say, it wouldn't change the fact that I'm leaving.
In the lobby, my mother and Declan were waiting for me.
“Fiona, where were you? I've been trying to call you and – ” My mother paused, realizing I was with Kali. This stumbled her thinking a little, I could tell.
“Just – go pack your bags. Our flight leaves in a few hours.” Time to say goodbye, I thought to myself. As I looked at Kali, I could see her eyes tearing up a little. I tried to hold back the tears as well, but it was almost impossible.
“I guess this is it. Good – ” Before I could finish my sentence, Kali pulled me in, kissing me passionately and intimately. Once we broke apart, I saw a smile grow on her face, as she whispered, “Goodbye, Fiona.” She then pulled away from me, waving goodbye to Declan and my mother, and leaving the hotel lobby.
I stood there, trying to recover from what had just happened. The first thing was that Kali was now leaving me and I possibly would never see her again. The second thing was that I had just had the best kiss I would ever have in my life. I looked over to my mother, who eyes were widened by what she had just seen.
I went up to my hotel room, packing my bags. Once I had finished packing, I came back into the lobby, strolling slowly to Declan and my mother. I could see there was a cab waiting for us outside. I stopped midway. Declan, who seemed fed up with all of this drama, grabbed my bags and threw them inside the taxi.
“Fiona, come on. We're gonna miss our flight.” My mother commanded, motioning me to come into the cab. She realized I wasn't moving and approached me.
“Mom, I don't wanna leave.”
“Fiona we --”
“No, listen. Please listen. I'm in love with someone, and I'm afraid that if I go back to Toronto, things won't be the same. I really love this person, and I haven't been happy in such a long time, and I was wondering if I could stay here. As in, live in Jamaica.” I paused, trying to gather my thoughts. “I have a whole plan set out. I could study by myself and finish my education, and find a condo to live in. It must be possible.” My mother was quiet, and just looked at me. I was desperate for answers. “Well, what do you think?” I asked, hoping she would compromise.
“Well, I've never seen you this happy before. And Kali better be worth it.” I hugged her tightly, glad to know that she understood. “But there must be guidelines: you visit us as often as you can, focus on schoolwork, and call us everyday.”
“Yes, yes, I promise!” I ran out the lobby, heading to the only place that I thought she would be at.

I rang the doorbell, waiting for a response. Within moments, Mr. Thompson, Kali's mother answered the door.
“Hello – Oh. It's you.” She said, with an attitude. I wasn't sure what she had against me, but I wasn't focusing on that.
“Hi, I'd like to know if Kali's home.”
Before she could answer, I saw Kali peak outside through one of the windows. Her eyes lit up when she saw me. She rushed over to the door, leading me inside.
“I thought your mom kicked you out.” I pondered.
“Yeah, but my Dad talked her into me not leaving. Anyways, what's wrong?”
“I'm staying.” I announced. She shrieked out of excitement, but this time, I took the initiative, pulling her in for a kiss. This kiss was much more potent then the one I experienced in the lobby, and she tasted like strawberries and mint. Caressing her neck, I could feel her arms wrap around mine. Damn, she was such a good kisser. We pulled apart, gasping for air, but pulling our face close to each other.
“I'm gonna find a place to live, and you can visit whenever you want.” I whispered to her delight.
“Are you – serious?” She said in disbelief. I shook my head in approval, and she squeezed me tight, kissing my forehead.
“So I guess it isn't goodbye.” She said, our eyes meeting.
I guess it wasn't goodbye, after all.
