"Oh god, I can't fucking do this." You mumbled to yourself as you meticulously studied yourself in the mirror. You couldn't help but stare at yourself in the mirror until you could barely comprehend what you saw. You nervously adjusted your clothes to make your figure look better.
This was going to be your first day at a new school, Westinghouse High School, and you were in the middle of nowhere. Life was pretty different in these small towns compared to the large city you'd just moved from, and you had the summer to make most of the cultural adjustments you needed to. You weren't able to make any friends, however.  Your parents relentlessly encouraged you to pick up a job, so you did at a small diner a few blocks from your house, which kept you from finding any people your age to talk to during work hours, and you found that outside of work you'd rather stay at your house and try to make it feel like a home; you found that decorating your room was oddly therapeutic.
"It's seven forty-five! Are you ready yet, Y/n?" Your mother shouted from downstairs.
"Almost! I'm gonna leave soon!" You replied.
You wanted to make sure that you looked your best when all your new classmates saw you for the first time. You grabbed your backpack and started your first walk to school.
After a bit of a walk, you arrived at Westinghouse. It was a decent looking school, but it looked to have a smaller population of students than your old school. You joined in on the morning bustle, and tried to find your first class. You lucked out and found it fairly quickly, managing to get there before the bell rang. Unfortunately, you were the last person to get to class, and you could feel everyone's eyes on you as you found a seat.
"What's with all these kids? How'd they all get here so early?" you thought to yourself, frustratedly. There was something about you, maybe your city kid vibe that just made you stand out in this new place. Maybe it was just that these kids have all known each other for years, and any newcomer would be intriguing. You decided to ignore everyone's curious gazes, and try to focus on classwork. Your first class went well, and you made a seamless transition to your next class, but you were disgruntled to receive the same fixation from your peers. Nobody had spoken a word to you, yet you were the underlying center of attention. It was so strange, nothing like you'd ever experienced before. You grew more nervous as time went on, and finally it was time for lunch. You brought a lunch your mom had packed for you, so you got basically first pick of seats while the majority of students waited in the lunch line.
"Great. I guess I'll just sit alone for today. I can wait in line tomorrow and then maybe I'll find a group to sit with." You thought to yourself.
You sat down at a round table with four chairs, watching the other students get their lunch and sit amongst their friends, chattering together about summer, school and local gossip. You started eating your apple as a tall-ish, slender girl with beautiful black, curly hair approached you.
"Is this seat taken?"
"No, please."
"I'm Dina, we have a bunch of classes together so far! I don't want you sitting alone—I was the new kid last year, so I know exactly what you're feeling right now." She said.
"Oh, thank you, that's actually kind of relieving", you sighed, "I'm Y/n, it's nice to meet you, Dina."
"Y/n. Cute! You don't look like you're from around here." She said, studying your outfit.
"Haha, yeah... I'm from out of state. Not really used to small town life. I guess I've stuck out like a sore thumb all day. It feels like everyone's been staring at me... Do I have gum in my hair or something?"
"No, oh my god!" Dina laughed, "You just have that quick-paced city demeanor to you. Not a whole lot of that around here. Your outfit's giving off city vibes too, it's super cute!"
"Oh my gosh, thank you! I was so nervous about it, I wanted so badly to make a good first impression since..." your words trailed off as an intimidating-looking boy in a letterman jacket approached the table, lunch tray in hand. He took a seat next to Dina and planted a kiss on her cheek, surprised, Dina giggled.
"Brad, hey! I'm talking to the new girl, her name is Y/n! Y/n, this is my boyfriend, Brad. He's on the football team." Dina said, smiling.
"Nice to meet you, Y/n." Brad said quickly, "Dina, I'm gonna go eat with the boys, but I wanted to come say hi for a sec so, hi! I'll see you later, okay?" He took off, and plopped down with a loud group of boys, also in letterman jackets.
"Sorry about him, he's all caught up in the first day excitement. I promise he's better at conversation when things are more calm." Dina said, with a kind of 'boys will be boys' attitude.
Another girl approached the table, taking the same seat Brad had just scurried off from. She had a ginger pixie cut, and wore big baggy clothing. She looked back and forth between you and Dina apprehensively.
"Oh, hey, Syd! Is it okay if we sit here today? I know it's not our usual table, but, hey, new year, new table, right?" Dina joked.
"Yeah, no that's fine!" she said, eagerly, while trying to be cool, "But uhh, who's this?"
"I'm Y/n. I moved here in June." You chimed in.
"Oh, cool. I'm Sydney. I go by Syd though usually. How's Westinghouse so far for you?" She asked. You hesitated, you can't just say it's not ideal...
"Uh... It's... okay..." you said.
"It's okay to say you hate it here, I do all the time." Sydney joked.
"Yes, Syd is Westinghouse's number one hater." Dina added. You laughed, relieved.
"Okay, phew! Classes haven't been bad, but everyone has been kinda weird toward me... Dina was the first person to talk to me all day." You admitted. Sydney scoffed.
"Typical. These kids are a bunch of weirdos, seriously."
"Heyyy... They're not all that bad, I promise, Y/n." Dina remarked. You laughed. These two seemed to have a strange dynamic, like they're friends but they have pretty different social outlooks. You spent the rest of lunch getting to know the two girls, and enjoying every minute of it. Dina suggested that the three of you hang out after school, and Sydney offered to have you over at her house. You were overjoyed that you had already secured two friends on your first day that had essentially fallen into your lap. You were beginning to think that maybe things wouldn't be so difficult here, even if you did stand out.
