The rest of your school day went by quickly thanks to the adrenaline rush lunch gave you, mixed with the anticipation of what was to come after school. Nothing else about the school day was particularly noteworthy, except for some kid that knocked over a bunch of vials in chemistry class, earning himself a failing grade for the project you were working on, despite the fact that the first lab of the year was supposed to be an easy A. You were just glad it was him instead of you.
You left the school building as quickly as you could, going straight to the meeting spot Dina had set up. You watched the rest of the students file out of the building, Brad with his buddies, large groups of kids that looked to be underclassmen not to far behind, and a large mix of other kids that followed. Finally, you spotted Syd slouching as she walked outside toward you. You smiled excitedly and waved.
"Hey, Syd! I thought class would never end today, haha!" you joked, "I guess we're just waiting on Dina then."
"Yep. I think she's grabbing something from her locker. I just hope she doesn't get swept away by Brad..." Syd said, her face grimacing, as if she had just bit into a lemon.
"Ah... Brad, yeah. I met him just before I met you. They're not two people I'd expect to be dating." You remarked.
"Ugh! Tell me about it..." Syd complained.
"Hey! What are we talking about?" Dina asked, popping seemingly out of nowhere, surprising you both.
"Oh! Hey, Dina! We were just talking about chemistry class. The teacher just gave me a bad vibe..." You lied. Dina nodded her head in agreement. Syd nervously chuckled.
"Hey, Dina. Ready to go?" Syd asked.
"Sure thing! Could we stop at the corner store and grab a few things, though? I could kill for an Arizona tea right now."
"Oh my gosh me too!!" you agreed, "Or maybe even a slushy..."
The three of you walked in a line together, eventually linking arms and skipping to the corner store like little kids, and laughing the entire time. You couldn't be more grateful to have found these two, they were already so kind and accepting of you, and you knew you'd become inseparable from them before long.
When you walked into the corner store, the three of you split up to get your after school snacks. You ended up playing it safe, and getting your favorite bag of chips, but you couldn't decide what drink to get. Dina and Syd were both perusing the snacks still, so you were alone. You got the feeling in the back of your mind that someone was looking at you, but you brushed it off until you felt a light, hesitant tap on your shoulder followed by a light, "Um... excuse me?" You turned around, facing a tall boy with brown curly hair, and a goofy grin on his face. He was wearing jeans, a t-shirt and an oversized cardigan. You were thrown into shy mode because.... well.. he was pretty cute. You felt heat rush to your cheeks as you shyly replied, "Yes?"
"Haha, um, I just wanted to say hi... ...Not in a weird way or anything!! It's just that like, uh- you're the new girl, right? At Westinghouse? I saw you in a few of my classes, and I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Stan! So uh... yeah. Hi." He nervously chuckled after making the least graceful introduction you've ever seen, and just to put the cherry on top, he stuck his hand out for you to shake. Which you accepted.
"Hey, Stan! I'm Y/n. Oh my gosh— you're the kid who spilled that stuff in chem, right? Aww, I'm really sorry about that.. You'll get your grade up in no time though, I'm sure."
"Ah... yeah that was me... I was hoping you would've forgotten about that though, haha..." Stan said, "I don't know, classwork isn't really my thing, though. I'll be lucky if I can keep my GPA above a 3.0 this year." You gasped. Grades were always a huge priority to you, and you couldn't really fathom someone not caring. And as if a lightbulb had gone off in your mind, you said, "Oh my gosh! I've always been pretty good at that kind of stuff. Maybe if you need help, you can ask me and we can do homework together or something?" The boy looked to the side and tried to suppress his growing smile, as his cheeks grew rosy.
"Yeah, that sounds good!" He said, taking off without another word.
"Oh wait shouldn't I get— your phone number..." By the time you finished your sentence he was out the door. It seemed like he was too caught up in conversation with you to realize he'd just waltzed out of the store without paying for anything he had, and the cashier didn't seem to notice or care. You laughed to yourself a little, he sure seemed like a character.
