Green.
A reminiscent breeze of clean air wafted past Jaehyun's nostrils. His muscles relaxed, with a vivid evocation of pine filling his senses.
The color was appropriate for the beginning of September that birthed the onset of Autumn. That was also the color of Lee Taeyong's hair for the week. As he walked into the classroom with his head high and beaming smile, he ignored the habitual stares of judgment, and antagonist comments spat in his direction.
Jaehyun knew the contented male heard the hate sneered towards him, for the newly green-haired Taeyong wasn't deaf, and students purposely spoke their incriminating thoughts loudly. Watching him arrive at his assigned seat without care sparked admiration within the younger.
He awed at the composure one could hold. It didn't stop there. Running silky pale fingers through his full dark hair, Jaehyun thought it was brave of him to dye his hair. Especially such wild colors. It was damaging, even without doing it as often as Taeyong did.
Due to that fact, he'd never do it. No matter how utterly appealing, he found it. Instead, he opted for watching the other's hair metamorphosis daily. Just last Friday, Taeyong surprised the student body with purple blooming from his scalp. The week before that, when school officially started, he walked in from the summer with beach blonde hair.
It was their final year of high school. If you asked Jaehyun who Taeyong was last year, he would shrug in ignorance. He had no clue who the older was until this year. The said boy was usually a quiet student, who hid in the back, and waited for people to approach him. He never did the approaching. The thought was distasteful, and if you told junior year Taeyong he'd become a social chameleon, he would laugh at the sheer mention of dying his virgin brunette hair.
Now that he was doing, he gained the attention of all sorts of people, including Jeong Jaehyun himself. Jaehyun wanted nothing more than to approach the naturally bubbly boy and tell him he liked his hair, maybe start a conversation. But he was shy and befriending the green-haired older terrified him.
Watching from afar wasn't too bad, though. It was safe.
"Well, that's an interesting color," The smooth-talking tone of Johnny Suh interrupted Jaehyun's swirling thoughts. The sudden statement that crept up on him made Jaehyun startled, and he jumped a little in his seat.
"Y-yeah." He coughed through the embarrassment, hoping Johnny didn't notice his moment of weakness. He did, but he didn't say anything as he was preoccupied with analyzing Taeyong's new hair color then to poke fun at his best friend.
"I heard the color green symbolizes growth," The older stated, turning towards Jaehyun. "I think he's saying stuff with these colors. Don't you?"
"Maybe?"
"Or it's just a call for help. Do you think someone should ask about it?" Johnny asked, totally engaged in his theories.
Jaehyun just shrugged at his tall giant of a friend. He honestly couldn't tell. Either way, he liked that the other did it.
A loud shush silenced all the loudmouths, like Johnny, when the teacher waltzed in with her early morning annoyed expression. Her aging face contorted in on itself. It was like she ate a whole lemon before she walked in.
She stalked to her desk and flopped into her seat. Her long light brown dress flapped with the motion. Without hesitation, she fixed her Ms. Kim name tag and dived into the lesson for the day. Johnny followed along and roughly opened his appropriate notebook and started scribbling down notes. Jaehyun, on the other hand, gazed out the window.
Perks of sitting in the back, he wouldn't get caught daydreaming. He could also get the notes from his best friend later.
As of right now, he watched as slight September rain fell from the sky. It cut through the warming air with ease. Each droplet splashed carelessly on jaggy asphalt or smoothly slid down overgrown grass slits.
No leaves littered the ground yet, but he knew the darkening green leaves were becoming slightly crunchy. Autumn was peaking its way through.
So immersed in thoughtless reverie, he almost missed the pitchy ring of the bell. Thank God Johnny kicked his ankle, or he'd be in an embarrassing situation. One such as sitting stupidly as the teacher approached him to leave, and he's the only one left in the classroom.
Johnny stood on his phone, waiting for his friend as he packed his things. "Can you send me the notes?" He shamelessly asked.
"Sure."
After zippering up his black Jansport backpack, he swung it over his shoulder and trailed his friend out of the classroom. On the way, he bumped into another straggler. "Sorry," The soft and deep voice of a certain green-headed male apologized in barely a whisper.
He was in shock. Jaehyun couldn't even respond as he stood there looking like an idiot. Taeyong just offered a small, confused smile and continued walking away.
Johnny watched the whole exchange in amusement. Chuckling at his dumbfounded, lovesick friend, he patted his shoulder. "You're whipped."
