No words could describe the immense emotional pain Colton felt as he stared at the girl he devoted his life to... Ten, nearly twenty years, of his life he had spent at her side... Protecting her and loving her when not even she loved herself... She knew his feelings, he had told her many times... She knew how much he loved her... She knew... And yet here she was asking him to walk her down the isle and give her to another man... A man that hurt him more than anything... She wanted him to give her to his own brother.
In that moment Colton's last bit of resolve crumbled and the walls he had built to keep himself protected crashed in on him... He could feel the harsh sting of tears behind his beautiful eyes as he pressed his lips together to silence the soft sob that begged to be released....
He shook his head and she frowned... She stepped closer to ask him why not, but he only pressed his lips to hers in a kiss that he knew would be the first... And last... A kiss he wanted to give her the day she told him she was ready for a relationship.... Ready to give him a chance...
But now it was a goodbye...
He pulled back and wiped his eyes, hoping to stop the steady river of tears as he turned and left... The kiss he had spared for her, his first kiss... Given to her as a goodbye instead of a celebration...
Given as the last goodbye he would ever give anyone for when he left the house and wandered the streets a petty criminal found him and took much more than just the worthless pendant he always wore...
